In-depth, even includes boat care and tuning. But the part of the book that struck me the most was chapter entitled 'What Makes a Sailboat Go' which included demonstrations helping to explain how a sailboat moves in the wind.

Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories (New Edition) Review

John Griswold has done James Bond fans a real service with this volume. However, he has done himself a disservice in the presentation. The good points are numerous - the chronologies, the details, the research, the definitions and much more. Where he has gone wrong is in the needless repetition, the annoying underlining of entries and the lack of information. He deliberately does not give away information in the chronologies in order to not 'spoil' the plot - no one is going to resort to a book like this without having read the stories beforehand, so withholding detail is useless. The alphabetical entries should have been amalgamated (not separated into the various novels) and all characters and places should have been included. His decision to present fictional and non-fictional characters in a different format is pointless - fictional cahracters could just as easily had an asterisk attached. The novels in which they occurred could have been indicated by a series of initials. He makes reference to 'The Encyclopaedia Sherlockiana' and should have followed this format. Similarly, the chronologies should have been presented in one block.
To sum up - I love this book for what the author has done, but am disappointed in what he has not done. A new edition with the suggested improvements would make it THE James Bond (novels) reference book.

"Catching Bass like a Pro" is a winner. The book is loaded with detailed tips and techniques that are easy to understand and to use. This work has just the right mix of pure educational material, history of the sport, anecdotes, time tested and new bass fishing techniques plus insights into the professional bass fishing.
This is one of the best bass fishing instructional books that I have read and highly recommend it for the experienced and novice angler.

Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future Review

"Yesterday's Tomorrows" is a look at how both popular culture and leading scientists, from the 1800s to the 1970s viewed the future. Joseph Corn and Brian Horrigan, using a variety of source materials, present these visions, both optimistic and grim, in a manner that avoids derision or arrogance. After all, some of these came true, and, in some cases, we wish the others had come true. But, as Corn and Horrigan point out, that's the beauty of the future: anything is still possible. The best way to explore how others viewed the future is through pictures, and this book has plenty. Corn and Horrigan draw on pictures, sketches and illustrations from magazines, TV shows, movies and books. While many of these visions, such as Buck Rogers' ray gun or a helicopter in every garage, are now nostalgic, many others, such as Buckminister Fuller's houses, still invoke wonder and awe. Corn and Horrigan provide a balanced approach to their theme by drawing from both popular culture and the scientific community's conception of what our life would be like. The book runs the gamut from future visions of cities, housing, transportation and warfare. Some ideas such as lasers have become commonplace while others like the flying tanks are prototypes that were passed over in favor of more practical options. But as the authors point out, who are we to judge these ideas from the vantage point of our time? Corn and Horrigan are careful not to poke fun at these concepts, but instead present them and explain their significance to the context of the times which produced them. Both fun and thought-provoking, this book is an excellent glimpse into not only the future, but into our dreams that make our tomorrows. Highly recommended.

In one word - Marvelous. Right when I got It it was a breeze using it. From the ime that you open it, to the time that it's covered in car grease and not ledgable anymore, its a truck owners bible. There is an easy-read index that guides you throughtout the book and tons of photos. As an amature mechanic, I can have trouble reading complicated scematics and maps to engines. But this book made it simple. I would definitly reccomend it to anyone. (Be sure to see the parts list in the back-great help on ordering hard to find parts)

The SPIDER'S normal practice is to ensure he gets credit for his bodycount of criminals by marking them with a vermillion seal of a spider upon their recently deceased foreheads. But, incredibly, a number of these evil-doers have seemingly returned from the grave, to form a veritable Council of Evil, dedicated to destroying The SPIDER. Almost as an afterthought, they want to pull off the biggest robbery in the history of the world, destroying much of New York City to ensure their safe getaway.
This is pure slam-bang pulp action at a mile-a-minute pace. It is the actual story for the October, 1940 pulp issue of THE SPIDEr magazine, with the type re-set for easy reading, the original cover, the original interior illustrations, the original rear-of-the-magazine filler story, and an "interview" with the author. In my opinion, this is a very under-rated book. Weiss does a nice job of integrating biology, tactics, weather and technology in a concise informative format that is easy to read and digest. The three main black bass species are covered; Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted.

Along the Edge of America Review

I enjoyed the book, though I had some problems with it. These had nothing to do with Jenkins' writing, which was superb. Rather, the whole "adventure" he writes about seems to have been orchestrated simply so that he could write a book about it. Unlike "A Walk Across America" which was written as an afterthought (since he planned his walk for its own sake, not because he wanted to write about it), "Along the Edge" seems a bit forced. Though he gives reasons for wanting to check out the coast, we can see that he was just looking for a unique adventure that he could write about.
Yes, I agree that this is what he does for a living, and why shouldn't he seek out another adventure? But this one lacked the magic of his other adventures. That said, most of the people he met in this book have fascinating stories to tell. The book is definitely worth reading--even if it takes some 80 pages of describing his preparations and training before he actually sets off.

It results in a miscarriage that nearly takes her life. A failed British Navy officer named Spicer who has always wanted to be a hero gets his chance in ousting the Germans from Lake Tanganyika and ending their primacy in East Africa. A man named Brian Cathcart goes in search of another man about his age named Brian Cathcart. A female author writes as a man. All these are intruiging stories and quite enjoyable to read.

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary (English and Spanish Edition) Review

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary is a must for any person who conducts business and personal events in both English and Spanish. As a manger in construction, I have found the listings for heavy, commercial and residental construction VERY helpful. Due to the detailed drawings, it is extremely easy to find not only the name of a specific item, but also the components of that item. It has even helped me find the correct word for objects in my native language!
I would be willing to pay more for the same book with a sturdier cover and binding. This book is going to get a lot of use! In addition to my book on 501 Spanish Verbs, I consider this pictorial dictionary worth it's weight in gold.

A Voyage Toward Vengeance Review

I read a lot of murder mysteries. This isn't quite that, as one learns early on who the killers are; it's more a suspense novel whose villains are murderers. It is also definitely a sea story. And underlying the whole thing is a theme of meditation on aging and the need for family and purpose at any age. Yes, that sounds like a lot of different things, but believe me it all works well. The complexity of the characters and the book's construction is very engaging.
It is fascinating to watch the slow convergence of Bill Stroud, our hero, with the villains. Bill finds his purpose and sets out on his quest early in the book; he brings all his flaws (a generalized hostility toward the world and a boatload of bitterness among them) along for the ride. But he is a fundamentally good man, and a competent one, and his approach to his quest is methodical. I was not at all sure how it would end (and stayed up till 4 am to find out that my guesses were incorrect) - but I trusted Bill, and had faith that in some way he would triumph. As a sailor, I loved the way Bill's boat almost became another character, as it was her seaworthiness that determined, in large part, the outcome of the voyage.
A great read - engaging characters and locations, described so that I could clearly see them; suspense without irritating misdirection; several laugh-out-loud moments when Bill said just the right thing; a resolution to this voyage that left me wondering what Bill and his friend Lydia will be doing next. I would think anyone who likes well written suspense would enjoy this book, and it will be a special pleasure to the sailors of the world.

Eye of the Storm Review

This is an early Sharon McCone mystery--she's still at All Souls Cooperative--but since she's away in the CA Delta area there's very little interaction with other continuing characters. However, her younger sister Patsy & her kids play a prominent part in the story. The bulk of the story is an armchair type mystery, but there are also some action scenes including a big one at the end. The mystery slowly unfolds. I found the motive easier to determine than the culprit. There are some sub-plots, but Muller eventually weaves it all together into a neat package. You CAN figure out the perpetrator near the end (before its revealed by McCone), but it's not easy. Overall, this is a solid Muller mystery which stands the test of time. It does remind me a bit of Agatha's 10 Little Indians to a degree. By the way, Muller also wrote 2 mystery trilogies starring 2 different heroines: Elena Oliverez (The Tree of Death, The Legend of the Slain Soldiers, Beyond the Grave) & Joanna Stark (Dark Star, The Cavalier in White, There Hangs the Knife).
