Linford Stutzman's Sailing Acts: Following an Ancient Voyage is a book of facts as interesting as fiction. In it, the author presents specific data about the apostle Paul, his journeys, and, incidentally, some sailing techniques. There is a wealth of information in the book, all of which is important to understanding how it feels to follow in the footsteps of one of the first missionaries of the Christian faith.
Sailing Acts is arranged in chronological order from the time when Stutzman first considered this voyage to its completion years later. It records the struggles in getting time to take the trip, buying the boat, and navigating through Paul's missions. The pace, like that of a sailboat, is slightly varied yet always interesting. It feeds the imagination as well as the logical mind with adventure and contemplation of life in another time.
Part of the charm of Sailing Acts is the personal touch Stutzman brings by telling his own story. It is not just that the apostle Paul had hard times when he took his voyages. It is not even that others after him found it difficult. It is the storyteller himself who works to make the trip a success, and he knows first hand what struggles, exertions, and blessings it takes to succeed. The reader feels as though he is there along with him, worrying about boat prices and getting through customs. The people seem real and ready for conversation. Weather in the Mediterranean takes on a whole new significance, and Paul takes on new realism. This realism and immediacy stem not so much from facts, but from the story of experiences.
As a professor of religion at Eastern Mennonite University, Stutzman has authority to speak about the facts of Paul's life and travels. His knowledge is woven together with his impressions of the people, places, and stories he encounters to form a solid image of what it might have been like for Paul as he made these same journeys nearly two thousand years before. I bought this manual to help solve a problem with the alarm system on my 150HP Merc outboard. The diagnostics led me around in circles as I replaced part after part without success. I finally solved the problem with advice that I got from a forum on the internet. The manual is VERY helpful though in disassembling and reassembling an engine. Without instruction and diagrams like this, you can create more problems than you solve.

I'm afraid the authors, while seeming to desire catering to the novice, merely came across as condescending with their choice of phrasing. The book is not set up very intuitively, nor does it lend itself well to general troubleshooting. The troubleshooting offered is positioned in areas of focus that would be difficult to determine without considerable knowledge up front, as opposed to assisting in isolating a problem step-by-step. Further, instead of helping identify parts, etc., the authors seem to assume that you have a thorough overall knowledge of your particular motor, and offer no path to that information. In its defense, the book does go into great detail about disassembling and cleaning or rebuilding different devices and systems. But again, it doesn't help you determine problems, so who'd know what to disassemble? Sorry kids, but major thumbs down on this one.

Provided some needed insight into my own effort to go electric. Much of it is well written and easy enough to understand. Some of it was way over my head technically, but still enough down to earth stuff to be helpful. Does spend a bit too much time on AC motors, which are not yet practical for battery powered craft, and he missed completely the permenant magnet motors such as Etek, PMG and LEMCO. Still there is a lack of published information in this area, and he does make a definate start.

Sage words on life and business. This book is a wonderful read if you have been to the islands or not. Insight is given on the charter industry and the personal relationships involved in such a job. Mr. DeGroot is a smart and amicable guy.
Obviously this is his first book and the writing is a bit stiff at the beginning, but don't give up he loosens up and turns into a wonderful story teller.
Highly recommend this entertaining read! And then don't stop till you are done with the second book!

i just bought and read the entire book. very good illustrations. the weakness (from my perspective only) is the book is more informative about boat building, but it does cover all aspects of repair. like the other fiberglass repair books i've read, this book explains that about 95+ percent of boats have been built with polyester resin, yet most repairs in the book focus more on using exopy to make repairs. because my boat is gelcoated over polyester resin, i am more interested in polyester repairs.

I bought this book, as well as "Sailing for Dummies" and "Learning to Sail - the Annapolis sailing school guide for all ages", and I have to say, the Complete Sailor is the worst of the three, at least for someone who has no previous knowledge of sailing. It was an interesting book with a wide variety of topics covered, but I think it would be better suited to someone with at least a basic knowledge of how to sail. If you truly want to LEARN to sail, the Annapolis book is the best and simplest of the three, particularly if you're learning on a dinghy like me.

This book is an excellent, highly independent criticism of the pros and cons of various sailboat designs, with a strong and logical argument for cruising catamarans.
Mr. Kanter makes some keen observations, not only about catamarans, trimarans, and monohulls, but also about the people who buy, sell, design, and build them. From the viewpoint of someone relatively little experience with catamarans, but extensive experience in monohulls, these observations have a ring of truth to them. They cut right through the marketing B.S. to the reality of cruising. In addition, he has a sense of humor and enjoyment about those unique cruising experiences that all sailors can appreciate.
The book is best for intermediate or advanced sailors.

Tom Stienstra has had an enviable career as an outdoor writer and enthusiast. In addition to his outdoor column for the San Francisco Chronicle, his "research" for each updated edition California Hiking, California Fishing, and California Camping, all best selling titles in multiple editions, keeps him in the field more than half the year. Would that we all were so fortunate. 'California Recreational Lakes and Waters' is really a supplement to the more popular 'California Fishing' volume, also put out by Avalon Travel under their Moon imprint. Like the former volume, this one discusses fishing in some detail, but the emphasis here is more on boating and water sports. Those looking for the best class V kayaking rapids in the state will find what they are looking for in this book. So will windsurfers, boaters, swimmers, and those still addicted to their canoes. (Steinstra is one of the latter, and his preface describes his life long love affair with his 15 year old green monster.) Just over 350 bodies of water are described, and subjectively rated, in this book (Little Lake Gregory near my house only gets a 6 on a scale of 1-10!) so you can easily find a body of water near you to explore on any day you should have free time. Given the price of gasoline these days, "nearby" is of upmost importance.
I do have some ambivalence about the marketing decision made by Avalon not to simply combine this book with California Fishing. There is substantial crossover between the bodies of water covered in each. Nonetheless, hard core fishermen are an audience unto themselves and other forms of water recreation are becoming increasingly popular in the state. Bottom line: this book gets five stars for doing what it sets out to do. Classic Stienstra, it is at once informative and amusing, and if it gets you outside, the book is more than worth the price.

Shantyboat chronicles the adventures of Harlan and Anna Hubbard, who in the early 1950's, built a wooden houseboat (or shantyboat) out of a demolished house and drifted down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Spanning several years, the book describes winters spent drifting freely with the current and summers foraging for or growing what was needed. Much more than a travelogue, the journey is an experiment in living just outside the confines of a newly emerging technological civillization, but still in a fully "civillized" way. Their lives were hardly lived in seclusion. Instead they preferred the richness of friends, good meals gathered from abandoned or empty lands, and art: Harlan was a painter, Anna a concert pianist. The story of their days drifting is often filled with anecdotes about weather, fishing, or dogs, and slowly draws the reader in with a steady seasonal rhythm. Their time on the river represents the last days of the shantyboater, a breed of free spirit that quickly dissappeared after the second world war. Industrial growth along the waterways, large new dams, and toxic pollutants ensured the end of a tradition of free living. Today, our world continues to grapple with issues of technology and its impact on what makes us human. "Shantyboat" offers an alternative, or perhaps a perspective on what is really important.

Jerome FitzGerald is knowledeable, even expert, at describing his practical methods of sailing without an engine. Any sailor will benefit from reading the book beginning at Chapter 7. This book should be required reading for everyone seeking a license to teach sailing or to run a marina. With the right Editor this book would appeal to a very large audience.
However, Jerome FitzGerald's book, like its author, has problems. Captain FitzGerald has lived the life, somewhat successfully, that more timid souls only imagine. He is free from the consumer society. As a rugged individualist, he will always do well in times of crisis. But, anyone who finds an alcohol making still aboard ship to be more important than a diesel auxiliary probably has a drinking problem. Indeed, the book is peppered with examples of conflicts with authorities and other sailors, similar to the life of the quarrelsome land based alcoholic. The author hasn't figured out that the Marina owners prefer the twice a year sailor who has to buy all new rigging for his boat for every outing, as long as his checks arrive in a timely manner. The operators of the ship's stores would all go broke if their customers were as resourceful as Mr. FitzGeral describes himself to be.
BUY THE BOOK. LEARN EVERYTHING HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT SAILING. IGNORE HIS ALCOHOLIC RANTS.

Despite the title, there is very little practical advice in this book about actually selling up and sailing. It is largely paranoid ranting about European bureaucracy, racist opinions towards all who are not British (Italians are thieves, Albanians murderers, Greeks - "despite their failings"- not so bad, and Americans.... well...). In addition to little on planning the big move and living the dream, there is almost nothing on sailing itself. Compared to Hal Roth's writings these are very light indeed. The authors seem to know this and bring up Hal for the purpose of ridicule because he prefers to use sail rather than the engine more often than they. Victualing covers some unique options such as salted horse tongue and pickled pigs feet. I bring up these obscure examples as they are not minor variations in the type of subject coverage and unless this is what you are after, you will not learn too much on feeding yourself. Unless you want to sail on a barge or a one-off custom designed boat, once again you will learn nothing. Production boats are ridiculed and there is no serious coverage on the subject of boat selection.
As another reviewer noted, the coverage on navigation and electronics is close to zero, and on non-electronic navigation limited to mentioning one author is an ex-professional and the the other took a course on the subject.
Finally, the most annoying feature is the author's complete lack of concern for the environment and their active ranting against the 'environmental nuts' that don't let them dump their sewerage in harbors ("fish crap too" is the logic here), use halon based fire suppressant or use toxic bottom paints- there is even an allusion to eco nuts interfering with legitimate sailing pastimes such as carving whale teeth as a hobby. The book is not in front of me at this moment- but I believe my quotes to be accurate. I am unwilling to read it again to make sure.
The authors may have spent a long time living on the sea but purchasing this book will do little other than to help prolong their ability to do so- it will not help the reader prepare or enjoy their own adventures as- in my opinion- such a book should. Mine is for sale if somebody wants it...
