Emy Thomas is a remarkable woman who spent a remarkable 13 years of her life living a dream. The book is at times both journalistic and narrative, and while it often follows a "how-to" format, it is also an entertaining anecdote of an experience most of us would love to have had. This is a great, quick read, and very entertaining.

Fishing with John Review

This is a wonderful non-fiction book about the life of a British Columbia fisherman written from the point of view of his wife & assistant, Edith Iglauer. Its not a "how I caught the big one" story, but instead a story of a fisherman's daily life, his relationships, and the enjoyment he gets from his work in the great outdoors. Edith Iglauer's writing style is much like the beautiful scenery and natural lifestyle she describes - a pleasure to read

BELIZE SURVIVOR: Darker Side of Paradise Review

No slow spots in this story. The author has created a great sense of anticipation on nearly every page - what is going to happen next? She is also very talented in painting pictures with words; the characters are developed or portrayed very well. Much is said without a lot of embellishment; and the reader easily constructs the mental images that give the story texture.
This book was an inspiration for me to travel to see the coral reefs of the Caribbean, and the tropical forests of Central America. I just returned from a trip to a Caribbean island to explore coral reefs. While there, I met an old man who practices bush medicine. I plan to return as soon as possible to record the plants he uses and the practices of his herbal tradition before this knowledge is lost. If I hadn't read this book I never would have found this new mission and this new adventure.

This second installment of the 'Woodswoman' trilogy is a step up in maturity for Dr. LaBastille. "Woodswoman" (one), dealt largely with the purchase of land and the building of a dream cabin on a remote lake. This books becomes more real, as Dr. LaBastille begins to have to worry about trespassing intruders, acid rain and the real threat that the government can pose in this unique environment. Determined not to let these new problems destroy her outlook or her life, Dr. LaBastille begins to build a second cabin - further into the wilderness. Encompassing both the new thrill of building a more isloated respite along with some freinds, brings another insight into Anne LaBastille's life ten years later. Numerous elderly Adirondack guides become great friends, sharing their own stories of the wilderness. A new romance evolves and the author has to deal with the reality of having to deal with both worlds. This book speaks not only of the wilderness, but the grand people that make and keep it unique. Of course, Dr. LaBastille's dogs are always given star treatment and her love of these animals is heartfelt. More refined and a little less naive, this second 'woodswoman' book will break and warm your heart at the same time.

The Last Longhouse Review

This is an amazing story of a 62 yr old woman who travels to Borneo to live among the headhunters. Ms Goins writes a most interesting true story of her trip up the Mahakam river to visit the Dyaks. The book is very well written and a page turner! One can tell that Ms. Goins is also an artist as she uses few brushstrokes to vividly describe a scene. I feel like I have shared her adventure including the mud, the raging river, the bugs, the beauty of children, the graceful dancers, the rice dishes, the honor and strength of their leader, the kind and not-so kind people. There are a number of good photos of the Dyaks. One learns of the beauty and sadness of their culture. I highly recommend this book as one of the great adventures and also to gain insight into the disappearance of native peoples. This is a facinating story and I've already given several copies as gifts to friends. You won't be disappointed with this one

Let's hope it gets back in to print. Perhaps one of Duras' most overlooked masterpieces set in torrid central Italy, forest fires creep closer to the resort, and mourning mine-searcher's mother awaits night and day the permit to bury her dead son. The senseless waiting and order we construct to hide the shallowness of our lives.
