Along the Edge of America Review

I enjoyed the book, though I had some problems with it. These had nothing to do with Jenkins' writing, which was superb. Rather, the whole "adventure" he writes about seems to have been orchestrated simply so that he could write a book about it. Unlike "A Walk Across America" which was written as an afterthought (since he planned his walk for its own sake, not because he wanted to write about it), "Along the Edge" seems a bit forced. Though he gives reasons for wanting to check out the coast, we can see that he was just looking for a unique adventure that he could write about.
Yes, I agree that this is what he does for a living, and why shouldn't he seek out another adventure? But this one lacked the magic of his other adventures. That said, most of the people he met in this book have fascinating stories to tell. The book is definitely worth reading--even if it takes some 80 pages of describing his preparations and training before he actually sets off.

And that's a complement in itself.
For the short term visitor, this book will be a good read.
It has lots of nice photos, background information and good descriptions of the major tourist areas of Ambon, Lease, Ternate and Banda.
Unfortunately information on other islands (even on rather easily accessible Seram or Halmahera) is extremely limited, and is usually supplemented by lengthy references to old literature like the Malay Archipelago by Wallace, or even descriptions of places based upon hearsay. Needless to say, lots of that is wrong.
This may just be a blessing in disguise however, as most remoter islands of Maluku are ill-equipped to cater for tourists, and those determined to visit such places will find discovering them on their own all the more exciting.
I'd still recommend this book for anyone interested in Maluku, but would warn against expecting too much from it!
In fact, general guidebooks to Indonesia by Lonely Planet and Rough Guides (strictly the 1st edition only!) contain just as much info on the sights and facilities of Maluku as this book, and are certainly more up to date.
But if you find all these too limited, you will just have to wait and see things for yourself!

Seraffyn's Mediterranean Adventure Review

This was my first book I have read which is a narrative on what it is like to cruise for years in the Mediterranean on a 24 foot sail boat. I am planning on a 3 month cruise in the summer of 2002 and wanted info on what it is like. The Authors had a good mix of experiences from Lessons-learned, weather/seas in the Western/Central Med, and alot of good narrative about the people they meant in a variety of ports. It was just what I wanted to understand what the experience is like. I was a little disapointed when the book stopped short of the Greek Island which is where I am planning on going. Over all, if you are thinking of cruising and want a little feel of it with out ocean spray, this is the book for you...

Emy Thomas is a remarkable woman who spent a remarkable 13 years of her life living a dream. The book is at times both journalistic and narrative, and while it often follows a "how-to" format, it is also an entertaining anecdote of an experience most of us would love to have had. This is a great, quick read, and very entertaining.

No Shoes Allowed Review

Sage words on life and business. This book is a wonderful read if you have been to the islands or not. Insight is given on the charter industry and the personal relationships involved in such a job. Mr. DeGroot is a smart and amicable guy.
Obviously this is his first book and the writing is a bit stiff at the beginning, but don't give up he loosens up and turns into a wonderful story teller.
Highly recommend this entertaining read! And then don't stop till you are done with the second book!

Eye of the Whale: Epic Passage From Baja To Siberia Review

Dick Russell has produced an amazing chronicle of the life of the California Gray whale. This is a book that is not only important today but will hold a place of value and respect hundreds of years into the future. Sadly this book may most likely survive the species itself.
I have spent over two decades studying and working to protect the Gray whale and I've lead four major conservation expeditons to protect the species. The first was in 1981 to Siberia, the 2nd and 3rd to Neah Bay in 98 and 99 to oppose the Makah whale hunt and the 4th to San Ignacio in 2000 to oppose the development of an industrial salt processing scheme that would have damaged the breeding and calving homes of the Grays.
Dick Russell got all the facts right in the areas that I have intimate involvement with so I can safely assume that his facts in all other areas are equally investigated and thus correct.
This is a wonderful story and it is a great work of historical documentation both natural,social and cultural.
My life was changed by looking into the eye of a whale in 1975. I believe that Dick also caught a glimpse of the mystery, the majesty, the magic and the marvel of the mind of the whale reflected from the eye of one of these great and gentle giants.
For only a person who has seen into the eye of a whale could have written such an insightful book.
I intend to buy a dozen of Dick Russell's books for Christmas presents this year.

Moon California Recreational Lakes and Rivers: The Complete Guide to Boating, Fishing, and Water Sports (Moon Handbooks) Review

Tom Stienstra has had an enviable career as an outdoor writer and enthusiast. In addition to his outdoor column for the San Francisco Chronicle, his "research" for each updated edition California Hiking, California Fishing, and California Camping, all best selling titles in multiple editions, keeps him in the field more than half the year. Would that we all were so fortunate. 'California Recreational Lakes and Waters' is really a supplement to the more popular 'California Fishing' volume, also put out by Avalon Travel under their Moon imprint. Like the former volume, this one discusses fishing in some detail, but the emphasis here is more on boating and water sports. Those looking for the best class V kayaking rapids in the state will find what they are looking for in this book. So will windsurfers, boaters, swimmers, and those still addicted to their canoes. (Steinstra is one of the latter, and his preface describes his life long love affair with his 15 year old green monster.) Just over 350 bodies of water are described, and subjectively rated, in this book (Little Lake Gregory near my house only gets a 6 on a scale of 1-10!) so you can easily find a body of water near you to explore on any day you should have free time. Given the price of gasoline these days, "nearby" is of upmost importance.
I do have some ambivalence about the marketing decision made by Avalon not to simply combine this book with California Fishing. There is substantial crossover between the bodies of water covered in each. Nonetheless, hard core fishermen are an audience unto themselves and other forms of water recreation are becoming increasingly popular in the state. Bottom line: this book gets five stars for doing what it sets out to do. Classic Stienstra, it is at once informative and amusing, and if it gets you outside, the book is more than worth the price.

After reading Lionheart years ago, I knew I had to read Kijana. Once again Jesse Martin and Ed Gannon did a great job with this book! While reading it, I felt like I was part of the crew since all the descriptions were so vivid. Jesse is my all time favorite adventurer and he helped me discover inside me an enormous sense of adventure and also encouraged me to follow it.

Tales of a Sea Gypsy Review

Tales of a Sea Gypsy was an enjoyable book to read and as a cruising sailor it was refreshing to read great stories and not the "how too" or "what I did on my summer vacation" usual. Ray Jason's writing style keeps you interested, is easy to read and very, very funny. I recommend a cruise through these mini adventures for any diehard cruiser and the many "I wish I was doing that" sailors everywhere.

Paul Theroux never repeats himself and what he chooses to present in each book is quaranteed to surprise anyone who has read any of his other books. In this novel, part travelogue/adventure and part American social critique, the chief character is one of the most fascinating and least likeable figures I have encountered in recent fiction. An American genius with no patience for the opinions of anyone else and a hatred for most of modern life, determines to take his family into the jungles of South America, where he sees himself becoming something of a saviour to the natives - bringing them a few simple forms of technology that will uplift and transform their lives. Instead, he plunges himself and his family into a hell of conflicts that he doesn't even try to understand.
The story, told from the point of view of his initially adoring (and fearful) son, follows the decline in the family's fortunes until it is clear that it is the father himself who is their real enemy. A tragic and deeply moving tale, this book stays in the mind - not always pleasantly - long after it has been read.

Moon California Fishing: The Complete Guide to Fishing on Lakes, Streams, Rivers, and the Coast (Moon Handbooks) Review

Tom Stienstra has spent his entire adult life exploring the outdoors in California and the Pacific Northwest. He supports his avocation by writing guidebooks to the state, the most popular being California Camping and California Hiking, the latter co-authored with Ann Marie Brown. But his true passion is fishing and it shows on every page of this book, the eighth edition of California Fishing.
Like other books in the Moon California recreational series, this one divides the state into 15 geographical regions ranging from Redwood Empire and Shasta in the north, to San Diego County and the desert regions in the south. Each region is given its own chapter and prefaced by a map giving noted locations for each write up. Every chapter then includes 10 to 80 fishing locations, each of which is briefly described, along with local boating regulations, nearby camping or resort opportunities, and similar amenities. Of course you will also be told what to expect, best seasons to visit, and some strategies for each body of water.
Fishing is an enormously addictive activity. As I child I owned multiple tackle boxes and would dream over my lures nightly as fishing season approached. I gradually moved away from fishing towards hiking exclusively, but after reading the book, I find I am again bitten by the bug. This April may well find me backpacking in Henry Coe State Park, and should that be the case, I will bring along some ultra light equipment and see if I can tempt a few bass or bluegill. So be forewarned; this is an excellent book, but it can lead to seriously reevaluating the relative importance of many things in your life. A t-shirt my mom gave my father sums this up nicely: We interrupt this marriage to bring you the fishing season!

What agony. There is nothing worth reading in this "book.' To read Sailing in Stitches is to peruse a cranky coots' personal list of intense dislikes. That's it.
John Cocker is a self-absorbed bore. There is not an interesting sentence to be found. It isn't just the lack of content, either--the writing is execrable (Ex: He leaves Dominica, "passes along the coast of Costa Rica"-- on the way to St Thomas (!!!!?)
Pity the poor souls who slaved on the boat for him and THEN also had to pay--both in silver and by having to remain, trapped on the boat,
in the presence of this oafish lout.
I had so looked forward to reading this--it is extremely discouraging to find that there is nothing here but a constant trickle of spleen.
yuk.

In Trouble Again: A Journey Between Orinoco and the Amazon Review

I wouldn't travel with Redmond O'Hanlon personally, although I'm quite happy to be a vicarious companion. And judging from O'Hanlon's opener here--where he tries to find someone to accompany him in his latest foray--it seem that my opinion is shared by O'Hanlon's friends. Except for one--who is shown to be under a mistaken impression about what a jaunt down the Amazon is like, not to mention having Redmond O'Hanlon planning the trip.
The title aptly describes the action. If you read O'Hanlon's Into the Heart of Borneo, this book follows without nary a break. While it doesn't have quite the originality of the first book, it doesn't fail to fulfill the promise of that book either. O'Hanlon's a little bit wiser, but still as trusting and stubborn. He presses on in circum- stances where most would have turned around--things like the fiercest tribe of natives in the world, torrential rainfall (not to be trifled with, especially on a river), and rapids in which he is dumped and unable to escape until a mile or so down river.
The best thing about O'Hanlon--although the amazing trips he takes are worthwhile in and of themselves--is the companions that he does manage to take. I'm not talking about the physical companions, who do provide humorous interludes, but the ones that are to be found in the books--the explorers who have traveled this route before. Rather than just supplying a bibliography, O'Hanlon uses them to annotate his own trip. An adventurer and a scholar, O'Hanlon's one of the best.

Having visited the region where this book is set I found it mostly interesting for giving a picture of how things used to be there - they are much changed today!
For those who haven't been to the Asmat region of New Guinea, this will be a fascinating read. Those inspired to go should be prepared to find it a lot more civilized these days.

This is a book for those looking to take some quiet time to think about life, the river, and the environment. It is not a logistical book for those wishing to duplicate the experience. Fletcher's journey reveals the river from the perspective of an elderly man traveling at a slow pace (6 months) who is absorbing the spirit and feel of the Colorado and reflecting upon a lifetime of wilderness travel. It is slow, methodical, and at times a little tedious, but rich in detail and thoughtfulness.
This is a book for the thoughtful and reflective, not the pump-me-up, thrill seeker. The little mistakes the author makes are usually pointed out by himself, and they mark the book as authentic in that Colin is a lot like the rest of us in his amateur knowledge of the details of wildlife. He differs, though, in his ability to tell the story, a unique story, of adventure and life.

What a little beauty this is!
Nearly 20 years ago, a gangling, footloose American gets boozed with a bunch of Borneo river-dwellers, and finds himself bound in a gentle obsession.
Soon after, he takes off across the island of Borneo on foot armed with a quick schooling in tribal bartering systems and not much else. He has no visa, no valid passport, an unreliable map, and a few sentences of Bahasa Indonesian.
He can survive in the rainforest only as long as he maintains the trust of the people he meets, as guides, tutors, friends. He does far more than survive, and it is clear from the modesty, resilience and humor that comes through in his writing, that he was made for just this journey.
For months on end he immerses himself in a world of exquisite natural richness, among a people who are white-skinned in the permanent shade of the forest canopy, who have no tradition of stories of the moon or stars because they are almost never seen.
For weeks at a time he and his hunter guides are - in a Western sense - utterly "lost", moving apparently aimlessly through trackless bush. When Hansen asks one of his companions how they will find their way to their destination, the Penan hunter says simply: "We will follow our feelings." Without ever labouring it, Hansen has written a travel book that is deeply satisfying to the spirit, full of wonder and rich in humor. He also captures the moment at which an ancient, closed culture hears the first troubling thunder of global economics.
When finally he reaches the coast, Hansen is so depressed by "civilisation" that he does the sane thing - slipping back into the jungle to retrace his steps, all the way back to Sarawak.
So truly does he tell his story, I find myself missing him - wondering what he got up to when he finally returned to the US, what travels he might have done since. As I was finishing this book, I saw a travel brochure extolling Kuching, the Sarawak trading town that was Hansen's first step-off point. The glossy explained how easy it was nowadays to travel inland, with the interior "opened up by good logging roads".

Cruising In A Big Way Review

Simple, easy reading book that offers a good "taste" for this kind of adventure. There is not much technical data, but this book did not appear to be written for that level. For the day-dreamer who wonders what PNW cruising is all about, this is as good a place as any to start.
The Author does include more detailed reference material in the back so that if one is truly interested in further investigation, he provides a good roadmap as to where to find this information.
