A Voyage Toward Vengeance Review

I read a lot of murder mysteries. This isn't quite that, as one learns early on who the killers are; it's more a suspense novel whose villains are murderers. It is also definitely a sea story. And underlying the whole thing is a theme of meditation on aging and the need for family and purpose at any age. Yes, that sounds like a lot of different things, but believe me it all works well. The complexity of the characters and the book's construction is very engaging.
It is fascinating to watch the slow convergence of Bill Stroud, our hero, with the villains. Bill finds his purpose and sets out on his quest early in the book; he brings all his flaws (a generalized hostility toward the world and a boatload of bitterness among them) along for the ride. But he is a fundamentally good man, and a competent one, and his approach to his quest is methodical. I was not at all sure how it would end (and stayed up till 4 am to find out that my guesses were incorrect) - but I trusted Bill, and had faith that in some way he would triumph. As a sailor, I loved the way Bill's boat almost became another character, as it was her seaworthiness that determined, in large part, the outcome of the voyage.
A great read - engaging characters and locations, described so that I could clearly see them; suspense without irritating misdirection; several laugh-out-loud moments when Bill said just the right thing; a resolution to this voyage that left me wondering what Bill and his friend Lydia will be doing next. I would think anyone who likes well written suspense would enjoy this book, and it will be a special pleasure to the sailors of the world.

Inner Passages (Michael Tanner Mystery) Review

Michael Tanner, a modern-day Captain Ahab, spends the entire length of "Inner Passages" hunting down the whale. In this case, however, the whale in question is a large white ship that deliberately ran down his yacht, killing his wife and a friend. With an obsession that rivals that of Melville's hero, Tanner gives up virtually his entire normal life to track down the offending boat, risking life and limb and career to do so.
Tanner finds that few people believe his story of the killer ship, encountered in the fog. He has few clues to go by, other than three letters of the ship's name and the distinctive sound of her engines. His friends and coworkers watch him self-destruct and then undergo a Phoenix-like resurrection as he wanders up and down the west coast, hanging out in waterfront dives, trying to find anyone who has a glimmer of information about his nemesis.
"Inner Passages" is a first novel, and that shows in many ways. While the linear plot is intriguing and engrossing, some of the execution is amateurish. Released by a small Texas publisher, the book would have been served by a firmer editorial hand. Too often, the viewpoint shifts randomly within a given scene. As early as the first pages of the novel, characters "info dump" in long expository passages intended to convey reams of information to the reader. Even though Brookins has other characters make fun of the "dumper," the end result is still the same.
Some of the dialog is stilted and awkward and there several coincidential occurances that are too convenient for fiction. Characters forget important details, only to remember them when they are needed most.
Brookins, however, knows his nautical details. His descriptions of the sounds and straights of the northwest are vivid and alive. Even when the character motivation is a bit muddled as they play a game of cat-and-mouse (and it's not clear who is the cat and who is the mouse from page to page) with the killer ship, the sensory details are strong and realistic. The fog banks are thick and palpable. A scene in which a yacht tips over when it runs aground as the tide goes out is particularly memorable and innovative.
The book is also filled with the intricate details of handling a yacht under a variety of circumstances, some of which is important to the plot and some of which merely helps to fill in the landscape with accurate but not overwhelming color.
So, does Ahab get his whale in the end? That would be telling... It is safe to say, however, that Tanner learns how to live after the loss of his wife and gains a new focus on life and career in the wake of his two-year hunt for the mysterious killer ship that came out of the fog.

Tales of a Sea Gypsy Review

Tales of a Sea Gypsy was an enjoyable book to read and as a cruising sailor it was refreshing to read great stories and not the "how too" or "what I did on my summer vacation" usual. Ray Jason's writing style keeps you interested, is easy to read and very, very funny. I recommend a cruise through these mini adventures for any diehard cruiser and the many "I wish I was doing that" sailors everywhere.

Sex, Lies & Spinnakers Review

This is a great mystery-thriller. The setting is a small sailboat in Mexico and points west. There is plenty of action (sex, lies, murder and mayhem) to keep the reader interested. It can be enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike. The author has obviously done a lot of research on boating and on the geography in which the story takes place. His attention to detail made me want to buy a sailboat and sail across the Pacific. As a reader, I felt like I was a part of the action on the boat, and there is plenty of action. The ending will keep you reading and wondering right up to the conclusion.

The Handler Review

Written with a sure hand that understands his characters and their circumstances, The Handler is a can't-miss combination of action and suspense--plus it provides a great introduction to Matt Fagan, who could easily become a private eye in the best tradition of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Robert Parker's Spenser, and John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee. Cady's plot barrels toward its breathtaking conclusion with the swiftness and power of the Tennessee River which provides its setting. A must-read!

The Testament Review

This is certainly the best John Grisham novel so far. A self-made billionaire commits suicide. When his last will is discovered, it is mind-boggling to the supposed-to-be heirs. He leaves his vast fortune to one of his children, Rachel. But she's enstranged to her father, and has given her life to God as a missionary in the jungles of Brazil. Now, the lawyers have to find her, which is not an easy task. In the meanwhile, the supposed-to-be heirs are circling like vultures, trying to overturn the 'insane' will. The story is suspenseful, heart-warming, adventurous, and beautifully written. It's also a picture of human nature, and the story carries a rare genuine redemptive byline. Really a good book!

Vanishing Act (Jane Whitefield Novels) Review

This book was a happy accident for me and I am glad to have discovered Thomas Perry's novels. "Vanishing Act" is an amazing, original story of a half-white, half-Native American woman who acts as sort of a one person "Federal Protection" guide. She helps innocent people in danger disappear. There are several successful clients she meets in the first part of the novel and the dialogue is a true as can be. There is a constant tense feel to the narrative, as not only is this job dangerous, but Jane must prove herself each time, given her race and gender. The ultimate client she helps to disappear turns out to be other than she suspected and she is left to resolve a dangerous and deadly situation. Most impressive in Perry's writing is his attention to detail. Not only are all the Native American rituals and survival techniques explained in detail (and implemented), but his knowledge of the Adirondack Mountains is as accurate as a compass. Jane travels through real existing lakes, ponds, rivers and mountains. It's the kind of book that keeps you up well past midnight just so you can reach the climax and resolution.

Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream Review

This is a wonderful book! One I will surely be giving as gifts to many of my Boomer friends who have even slightest interest in sailing. A combination of poetic philosophical musings (in the intro) and very practical advice on buying a boat, outfitting it and finally, the joys and challenges of sailing it!
Chapter 1 is an exciting and harrowing account of a crossing in the Sea of Cortez which, fortunately, through hard-earned experience, a well-outfitted boat, common sense and some good luck the Djoses survived intact and ready to write this book.
The Djoses are a couple who celebrate the joys of sailing together thereby inspiring armchair sailors to set sail themselves. Highly recommended.

The Man Beneath Lake Union Review

The Man Beneath Union Lake is my first taste of a micro-adventure book, and it has definitely whetted my appetite for more. C.L. Vaughn introduces us to Owen Ruger, a fearless adventurer who is not afraid to get in the middle of danger--especially when there is a beautiful woman needing his assistance. Vaughn jumps right into the action and never lets up until the last page of the book. If you love action/adventure books, then give Vaughn's The Man Beneath Union Lake a try. Be warned, however, these micro-adventures can become addictive. Let's hope that this isn't the last we see of Owen Ruger.

Captiva (Doc Ford) Review

Randy Wayne White played in the Senior Baseball League, writes a column for Outside magazine & some terrific fishing stories (Batfishing in the Rain Forest: Strange Tales of Travel & Fishing) and is the author of the outstanding Doc Ford novels. Not bad...
Doc Ford is a marine biologist who formerly held a somewhat shadowy position in US Intelligence. This installment of the series finds Doc & his burn-out hippie friend Tomlinson investigating the death of explosion victim Jimmy Darroux. This leads them to Jimmy's delectable widow Hannah and a feud between sport fisherman and net fishermen over a pending netting ban. As the violence escalates, noone is safe & Doc's moral compunctions are challenged and then shattered.
If you haven't discovered this great writer & wonderful series yet, I urge you to give them a read. The cover blurbs comparing him to John D. MacDonald, Carl Hiassen & Elmore Leonard are well deserved.

Wired Kingdom Review

From the very first page of "Wired Kingdom" the reader knows something's up. There's excitement, energy and a whole lot of the unknown wound up tight as a spring on this first page. And that's just on page one. Rick Chesler has set up a powerful tale in this novel and although many characters venture in and out of its pages, the riveting story never loses its focus. There are some strong viable people in this book but it has only one main character.
Chesler is at his best when the action turns to the water, or rather "under" the water. Clearly the star of this novel is the Blue! Painted accurately and dramatically the whale has a personage all its own and one can almost feel the massive weight as it moves through the depths. Scenes and descriptions when the Blue is on the page are beautifully crafted and gripping. The author puts you in the depths and you can almost hear the sounds emitting from the creature, feel the velvety wet skin as the 100-ton Blue swims near. Chesler knows how to make your skin crawl.
This novel has one of the most exciting endings this reviewer has read in a very long time. If you want action, it couldn't get any better. "Wired Kingdom" is truly genuinely exciting reading. A welcome thriller in a literary world where few books surprise. This one does.Joyce Norman

Extinct Review

A young boy watches two of his friends go under water. His dog starts barking. His friends never resurface. And so begins Extinct, which will probably before ever known as the 90's other giant shark book, getting nowhere near the publicity (or blasting) of Steven Alten's Meg. But unlike Meg, this book takes it's plot seriously, and despite the name, revealling the Megalodon's presence is a big spoiler, as when the marauding shark is first discovered, it is mistaken for a normal great white. As for characters, well, I'm sure Wilson read a lot of Peter Benchley before writing this, because most would be right at home on the pages of Beast, Jaws or Creature. There is drama and action, with some mystery added, and in the end it is entertaining. But the twist in the end, while jaw-dropping storywise, is highly unlikely reality wise, which is not such a good idea for a novel whose main draw is it not as comicbook as Meg. Still a good read.

Precious Cargo Review

I couldn't wait to read Precious Cargo after reading the first Charlie Noble book, Red Herring. I was not surprised that I also couldn't put this book down. Clyde Ford takes you, with his characters, through a spellbinding story and has you experience beautiful destinations. His characters become real as you are able to share their journey. A great mystery fan, I so admire Charlie's theories and deductions. Raven entering into the scheme of things adds depth. Great action, great scenes, heartfelt characters, great author. What more could you ask for, but more books. Thanks, Clyde.

The Lord God Bird Review

The Lord God Bird is a startling narrative that takes the reader into the Deep South in 1949 in search of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker. The protagonist, a nineteen year old, and his girlfriend become enmeshed in a noir mystery that is entangled with racism, violence and passion. Hill writes a lyrical prose that is a combination of Faulkner mixed with Cormac McCarthy. If you pick this book up, you won't be able to put it down. The prose is lyrical and the characters will haunt you. A sweet, sad read...and worth it!

If you have never read a Minette Walters books before, this is an excellent introduction to her writing. If you have read any of her other books, you will not be disappointed with "The Breaker".
From the moment you settle down and read the first chapter, you will find an exploration that you won't want to put down. The mastery of Walters' style is shown here as the story quickly devolves down to only two main suspects, yet the suspense is held to the very end.

In the Dark of the Night: A Novel Review

(SPOILER WARNING)
The idea of items that serial killers use containing a leftover "evil" power is a great idea. But Saul doesn't really use it much--he could have had the boys become "possessed" by the spirits of Lizzie Borden, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein, et al. But nothing really happens to the premise and the book concludes with "Lizzie" running amuck. (In fact, this was the real flaw in the book because the axe she was accussed of using was NEVER found.)
And other than the subject matter, this is really a YA novel -- the main characters are teenagers and the secondary story -- "townies" versus the "summer boys" -- is merely filler and goes nowhere.
Would have been much more interesting to see the ADULTS become slowly obsessed with the items. Again, interesting idea, just doesn't work.

Bahamas West End Is Murder: A Ben Candidi Mystery (Ben Candidi Mysteries) Review

Ben Candidi has a doctorate in pharmacology, a freelance career as a scientist, an alluring physician as a soul mate, and a nose for murder.
Ben and Rebecca encounter a sinking cabin cruiser when sailing to the Bahamas for vacation and a bit of work. They decide to tow the craft to the West End marina, along with the onboard body. Ben intends to claim the craft for salvage.
They settle into a slot in the marina to relax and enjoy their time while waiting for permission to take their prize to Miami. But the Florida corporation who owns the yacht ignores their claim, and the Bahama police won't let them leave with it. Then it becomes obvious that the friendly people in the neighboring slips and their island associates aren't all just enjoying the beautiful weather and fine snorkeling. Ben needs to save more than his salvage claim. Now he has to save their lives.
Dirk Wyle has an understanding of science--he is a scientist first--and a deep appreciation for sailing. He brings both elements to the reader in this fast-paced novel.

Something's Down There Review

So Mickey Spillane wants to shoulder Mike Hammer's favorite pistol for a book and bring us a big fish story (of sorts). Fine. SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE isn't exactly the page-turner we're used to when it comes to the hardboiled thrillers Spillane is so clever at concocting, but it's not a dud, either. Not by a stretch. In fact, I'd say there were intimations of this novel - its pacing, its location, its more sedate and world-weary hero - in the last Hammer novel, BLACK ALLEY. Consider Mako Hooker a distant (and I mean distant, but nevertheless related) cousin to the Mike Hammer we encountered at the beginning and end of BLACK ALLEY: tired, nursing recent wounds and (by the end of the book) fresh ones. Hooker is the 21st century remnant of the gritty tough guy that served as central character in Spillane's earlier work. That said, I certainly hope we see Spillane resurrect the more visceral tough-as-steel Mike Hammer in the forthcoming novel (Summer 2004).
As for the plot and pacing of SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE, there's a stab at local color here that's a far cry from the dark, cold and rainy New York City that provides the backdrop of the Mike Hammer stories. This time Spillane paints a quiet seagoing life off a small island in the Caribbean. The general laid-back environment and day-to-day routines are disrupted when something starts sinking fishing ships - enough of them to pique the interest of the Company. But Company-agent Mako Hooker is no Tiger Mann (remember him?) and the twists and turns this leisurely paced book takes are not the twists and turns of Spillane's best mysteries.
If you're a Spillane fan, though, SOMETHING'S DOWN THERE is a must-read. There are enough echoes of the hardboiled Spillane here to make you nod your head nostalgically and agitate your anticipation for the forthcoming new Hammer novel.
