Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories (New Edition) Review

John Griswold has done James Bond fans a real service with this volume. However, he has done himself a disservice in the presentation. The good points are numerous - the chronologies, the details, the research, the definitions and much more. Where he has gone wrong is in the needless repetition, the annoying underlining of entries and the lack of information. He deliberately does not give away information in the chronologies in order to not 'spoil' the plot - no one is going to resort to a book like this without having read the stories beforehand, so withholding detail is useless. The alphabetical entries should have been amalgamated (not separated into the various novels) and all characters and places should have been included. His decision to present fictional and non-fictional characters in a different format is pointless - fictional cahracters could just as easily had an asterisk attached. The novels in which they occurred could have been indicated by a series of initials. He makes reference to 'The Encyclopaedia Sherlockiana' and should have followed this format. Similarly, the chronologies should have been presented in one block.
To sum up - I love this book for what the author has done, but am disappointed in what he has not done. A new edition with the suggested improvements would make it THE James Bond (novels) reference book.

The Testament Review

This is certainly the best John Grisham novel so far. A self-made billionaire commits suicide. When his last will is discovered, it is mind-boggling to the supposed-to-be heirs. He leaves his vast fortune to one of his children, Rachel. But she's enstranged to her father, and has given her life to God as a missionary in the jungles of Brazil. Now, the lawyers have to find her, which is not an easy task. In the meanwhile, the supposed-to-be heirs are circling like vultures, trying to overturn the 'insane' will. The story is suspenseful, heart-warming, adventurous, and beautifully written. It's also a picture of human nature, and the story carries a rare genuine redemptive byline. Really a good book!

Islands in the Stream Review

Of the Hemingway books I've read or tried to read, Islands in the Stream is my favorite thus far. All the great and not-so-great elements of his legendary style are here, from the deadpan prose to the men who try too hard to be men, but they all fit together very well in this case. The exotic island setting is perfect for Hemingway's trademark everyday-life-is-an-adventure motif, which for once is wholly convincing.
Thomas Hudson, a hard drinking, twice divorced, expatriate American artist, is an all too obvious self-portrait. But his low-key reactions to most of life's ups and downs, the inner demons he mostly keeps a lid on, and his begrudging love of life in spite of it all can surely appeal to the romantic adventurer in all of us. The three sections of the novel, bound only loosely together, follow Thomas from an average day in paradise to a tragicomic reunion with the lost love of his life to a Nazi-hunting adventure off the coast of Cuba. Along the way, there are tragic twists delivered without any sappiness whatsoever, as only Hemingway could do, not to mention a life-or-death fishing scene that rivals "The Old Man and the Sea."
I can't imagine why this is being marketed as a love story, as that aspect of the novel is probably its weakest point, although his (very few) women characters are at least marginally more developed and convincing than usual. It's really more a story of escape and coping with the lack of love, and it's one of the best I've ever read of that subgenre. Yes, as others have pointed out, it's a bit uneven and the first section holds up better than the other two; and yes, the editing is imperfect and surely not exactly the way Hemingway would have wanted it. But the whole book is worth reading all the same. Given Hemingway's condition toward the end of his life, we're lucky to have it.

Cyclops (Dirk Pitt Adventures) Review

I thought that Clive would be hard pressed to out-do 'Raise The Titanic' widely considered his best work...but I've gotta admit, 'Cyclops' does it for me. It puzzles me how some reviewers seem surprised at the seemingly impossible situations Dirk finds himself in, and STILL manages to escape FROM, and STILL get the girl. C'mon! As one reviewer already stated, Clive writes seriously fun books, but doesn't take the story too serious that it cannot have fun in the process, and even though you might be crying 'foul' in one sentence, by the next, you have forgotten how implausible if not down right IMPOSSIBLE the story has become, and you just continue right on through because it was written for entertainment purposes, and THAT is what 'Cyclops' does in GRAND Style. Cussler has written possibly his best story (although I have to admit Atlantis Found is right up there) and given us a fantastic tale that will endure well beyond the years. Unlike certain forms of music, and clothing, Pitt will ALWAYS be in style.
As always, I enjoy feedback on MY opinions: rmgomske@lightcom.net

Lucky's Lady (Doucet) Review

Serena Sheridan is a psychologist who returns to her ancestral home in Louisiana for a vacation. When she returns she has to deal with her seventy-eight year old grandfather who has gone out to his fishing cabin and refuses to return. She has a calculating twin sister that she has never gotten along with. And a politician brother-in-law who is very wishy-washy.
Serena finds out that a chemical company wants to buy the family property for a plant that will endanger wildlife. Her sister wants the property sold, of course, so she can have the money to advance her husband's political career.
The hunk of the story, Lucky, lives in the bayou and is a type of Robin Hood crusader. He keeps out the poachers and helps the people who live in the bayou. Lucky is put to the test by his inner demons when he finds himself falling in love with Serena.
Hoag fans who have read more recent books of hers, will find this more of a romance novel then Ashes to Ashes, Guilty as Sin and Night Sins. However, it is a great book with a good mystery, if a little more romantic then we've gotten accustomed to with Ms. Hoag.

Still Waters Run Deep Review

Set on Upper Mississippi River in 1976. Garrity's detailed description immerses you into Dart's world. It captures the emotions, feelings and character of the entire region. I felt like I was there, in the back seat of Marlon's Cuda. It brought back my own memories of sneaking off to my first Party. Being fearful of the Bully at school and experiencing my first concert. If you're like me, and survived the 70s as a Teenager or enjoy Richard Linklater's "Dazed & Confused" movie. The book is a nice escape that I didn't want to end. I recently learned that Garrity crafted his visionary skills as a Photographer for Rolling Stone, SPIN, and Interview Magazines, which explains why he can craft scenes so well in the story.

Tort Law Review

Tort Law for Legal Assistants is a must for any civil litigation paralegal. I selected it based upon its table of contents, and it delivers. It is a clear, concise overview of tort law that provides reasoning, theories, relationships, elements, effects, limitations, applications, and much more. I wish I had known about this book during my paralegal training classes. At least I have it now as a review tool and reference guide for assignments as a paralegal.

101 Harley-Davidson Performance Projects: For Evolution Big Twins and Sportsters (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

As an intermediate level "hacker" when it comes to repairs, I had always been more comfortable having the local dealer take care of routine maintenance. Prior to receiving this book I was only changing the oil and transmission fluid on my bike. However, "armed" with this new found information I now cover the bike from front to end! The layout and excellent photographs are easy for even ME to understand!! There is not a lot of industry jargon involved, making it simple for the "mechanically handicapped" to understand. My only complaint is that the book is not longer and I am impatiently awaiting "Volume II."

Sailing Skills & Seamanship, BOOK (Us Coast Guard Auxilary Assoc) Review

Unlike many other sailing texts, this book covered a broad range of boating topics. Clearly not a sailor's fine-tuning tome, this book surprised me, however, by covering sail trim and boat balancing very adequately, and in some cases more clearly than more advanced sailing manuals. Since it's written for sailors in U.S. waters, it covers topics such as trailering, waterway navigation, and rules of the road for the U.S. more specifically than any other text I've seen.
All in all, I'd say this is my top choice for a text for a new sailor who's got down the sailing basics and needs to know the many practical aspects of safe sailing in U.S. waters.

Arctic Drift (Import) Review

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of Dirk Pitt novels than me, and while the anxious 'sit & wait' attitude until the next adventure comes out has softened somewhat with the last 4-5 novels, I gotta admit that it's tough to beat an action-drenched sea-worthy drama like the type produced by the Cussler's.
After being totally UNDER-Whelmed by the cover of 'Arctic Drift' (easily one of the worst in the entire Pitt library), I began with earnest to get back to what I love to do most: become entirely entrenched into a world where NUMA is real and saving the world is as easy as turning the next page. This time around, a completely random discovery that may very well 100% reverse Global Warming has been discovered, only to have another nasty megalomaniac--this time around from Canada--attempt to block it in order to continue to rape the environment for profit, all the while doing his best to look like his company cares about being Green more than almost anyone.
Along the way, Dirk's children, Summer & Dirk Jr. have managed to stumble upon a dangerous arm of our nasty Canadian while doing otherwise boring research half-way to Alaska on the Canadian Coast. Of course everything becomes connected in only the way that Dirk & Co. can manage to be at the right place at the right time to help. The horrible Canadian has done his best to spark what could very well be a major conflict with America, one in which an armed response seems inevitable, and right in the middle: you guessed it...Dirk Jr., Dirk Sr., Summer & Al Giordino. Along the way we discover some interesting History revolving around the efforts to discover a North Passage near the North Pole and what lengths some people will go to in order to add a few million dollars more to their already outrageously huge personal fortune.
While the debate continues to rage about the validity of mans impact on Global Warming vs. a cyclical pattern that the earth adheres to which man simply cannot influence, one thing is certain: Dirk Pitt continues to provide a slam-bang fun ride, this time through the North West Territories.

Seamanship Techniques, Third Edition: Shipboard and Marine Operations Review

I am a student of Maritime Studies in Hong Kong and I am very interested in this subject. Before I purchase this book, my school lend the "Second Edition" one to me. After I have a glance on it, I think it is very useful to me, so I decided to buy a new edition one for myself.
On 1/5/2008, the book arrived. Then I open it to have a look. WOW! The content is very detailed and clearly shown with annotated diagram. If you are interested in this topic, you should buy one for yourself!

Living Well on Practically Nothing: Revised and Updated Edition Review

I've enjoyed this book and found it an interesting read. The author does offer some good "thrifty living" advice throughout the book as well.
However, some of this book is more radical than most people might be willing to follow. We are a family with several young children - we aren't really up for moving away from all family, Church, and friends to live in a remote rural location. Nor would we be willing to convert an old bus into a home for our family. We aren't willing to give up basic utilities either. And as far as squatting on someone else's land and hiding our camp... well, let's just say that's not very practical with toddlers. :)
So, I think this book may be somewhat useful to families who are trying to live a thrifty existence and avoid the consumer trap. But at the same time, much of the advice may be too extreme for most people.
Its worth reading though, and I found the author's wry, conversational style writing entertaining and easy to read.
