In one word - Marvelous. Right when I got It it was a breeze using it. From the ime that you open it, to the time that it's covered in car grease and not ledgable anymore, its a truck owners bible. There is an easy-read index that guides you throughtout the book and tons of photos. As an amature mechanic, I can have trouble reading complicated scematics and maps to engines. But this book made it simple. I would definitly reccomend it to anyone. (Be sure to see the parts list in the back-great help on ordering hard to find parts)

I bought this manual to help solve a problem with the alarm system on my 150HP Merc outboard. The diagnostics led me around in circles as I replaced part after part without success. I finally solved the problem with advice that I got from a forum on the internet. The manual is VERY helpful though in disassembling and reassembling an engine. Without instruction and diagrams like this, you can create more problems than you solve.

I'm afraid the authors, while seeming to desire catering to the novice, merely came across as condescending with their choice of phrasing. The book is not set up very intuitively, nor does it lend itself well to general troubleshooting. The troubleshooting offered is positioned in areas of focus that would be difficult to determine without considerable knowledge up front, as opposed to assisting in isolating a problem step-by-step. Further, instead of helping identify parts, etc., the authors seem to assume that you have a thorough overall knowledge of your particular motor, and offer no path to that information. In its defense, the book does go into great detail about disassembling and cleaning or rebuilding different devices and systems. But again, it doesn't help you determine problems, so who'd know what to disassemble? Sorry kids, but major thumbs down on this one.

This book offers very little help. Contents and index listings do not lead to needed information; information is hard to find, i.e. tork specs. Trouble shooting does not cover all scenerios. This is a good book if all you need is something to sit on a shelf and gather dust.

Evinrude Johnson Outboard Shop Manual 1.5 to 125 Hp 1956-1972 Review

I found this book to be a very good shop manual, as it includes most of the repair procedures anyone would want to perform. However, I found this book lacking in a couple of areas. For one, there is not a comprehensive troubleshooting section. Troubleshooting steps are given for a few systems, but this book is written only for service, so you have to know what is wrong and what part of the motor to work on before this book is useful. Also, much of the engine terminology is not defined, so again you need some experience with this before you start. Once you get past these hurdles, this manual is very detailed, with plenty of good pictures showing key steps in the repair proceedures. For the seasoned marine mechanic, this is an excellent reference. For the do-it-yourself boat owner, it might not be the place to start.

I ordered the Seloc Manual for the 1.5 to 40 HP Johnsons thinking it would probably be a nice companion to the "other" manual I already had. I was wrong - - the other one is nothing compared with this one. It gave me the know-how and confidence to go ahead and do major repairs as well as tune-ups etc. that I couldn't have done without it. It's just like having a master outboard repairman looking over my shoulder and giving me little hints and suggestions along the way. Lots of excellent photos, too which are extremely helpful. Totally recommended! I would actually give it 15 stars!

This book contains some good tips, but also a few technical errors. Minor oversights in proofreading perhaps but they are worth noting here as this book will no doubt be read by aspiring off-road enthusiasts, not seasoned veterans. On page 81 in the inset piece titled "Is my clutch toast?", the author states that a worn or stretched clutch cable will cause your clutch to slip, when in fact just the opposite will occur. If there's too much free-play in the cable your clutch pack will not be fully disengaged with the lever pulled in, causing it to "drag" when a gear is selected. The other error of note is on page 95 regarding the carburetor air mixture screw function. The author states that turning an air screw in will make the mixture leaner when in fact, the air screw turned in reduces the air flow, which makes the air/fuel ratio richer.

Besides being completly through on nearly every detail of my spcific engine, I learned doezens of useful and time saving techniques. Some of which I passed on to my mechanic and he too benefited from this book. I was able to feel confident in my mechanic, knowing what he was doing to my Engine and Why he was doing it...I never felt ripped off. I understood why each task and repair was performed. I feel i could have done the work myself if i had the tools.

Clymer Volvo Penta: Stern Drives Shop Manual 2001-2004 (Clymer Marine Repair) Review

I bought this repair manual mainly because I needed a wiring diagram for my boat so that I could do some diagnostics and repair. I didn't expect to get a repair manual that was as good as this one is. It is readable and contains very good diagnostic and component testing information.
Most aftermarket repair manuals aren't worth the paper they are printed on. THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT. I have owned name brand shop manuals that weren't as well written as this manual. Of course the user of this manual needs to have a fairly good understanding of internal combustion engine operation including the basics of fuel injection for it to be useful, but the information of how each system works, fault isolation, trouble codes, and sensor testing are detailed in this book.
To use this manual one does need to sit down, actually read it, and understand what the manual is saying. Fortunately this manual is written in a way that reading it is very straight forward. Of course, if you are hoping that you can hook up a scan tool, waive the book over your engine, say a few magic words, and have it magically fix your boat, you will be disappointed.
Pro's-
- The book covers a limited number of years that are all related by some set of common technology. Many aftermarket repair books cover a decade of models and only have general information.
- The book has specific information about specific models
- Most of the diagrams are easy to read/see
- The color coded wiring diagrams are very valuable
- The general maintenance information is good
- The book often tells you why, not just what
Con's
- Even though the year range is limited, you still have to be careful that the information you are reading pertains to your specific engine or outdrive.
- Some of the photographs (a very small number) that show the location of certain items are too dark to see what is being shown which I suspect is a printing problem and is not due to the original artwork.
Overall I rate this book to be VERY GOOD as far as repair manuals are concerned.

The book describes the motor systems well. Obviusly written with the beginner in mind. Evin if you don't plan to do the repairs yourself, its a good book to browse through so you know your not getting ripped off at the dealer. Or, you may better understand problems at sea in emergencies.

I was very disappointed by this book. When I wrote to the publisher, they were not very polite and stated that I should not buy their publications as they did not want my money.
I would recommend that others, too, not part with their money on Seloc publications.
My problems: trying to cover too much, typeface - too small of a font, etc.
They should take a look at the Haynes series, much easier to work with in your workshop

wow where do i begin. first off im a student at mmi (motorcycle mechanics institute)which has campuses in both phoenix and orlando. i bought this book to supplement my education and honestly it was a great purchase. its very easy to read and understand the first time through whether or not you have previous motorcycle knowledge of which i had none or you are experienced in mechanics. the theory section is an absolute must and just as thorough as the notes i received at mmi. the photos are great much better than youd find in your average factory manual and if you have no mechanical experience forget about trying to read one of those. factory manuals are written for "seasoned" techs. mark zimmermans book is written for both the average joe biker or someone with plenty of experience. he even takes the time to put in tips such as "what to do when you strip a bolt", "how to torque a bolt" and much more. overall im very impressed i have yet to find a section that i felt was inadequate. other books i have found dance around the subjects and dont give you the information you need. this book hits the nail on the head everytime.....thanks mark

Build the New Instant Boats Review

A great book about simple, straight forward boatbuilding. The author presents information and designs on building boats using a tack and tape method and a more convential framing method. I've built one boat from this book and am starting a second one. Payson's boatbuilding information or Bolger's designs alone are worth the price of this book.
I have to take to task the two reviewers who have indicated this book short changed them. For starters, I think the author is an honest person. In one reviewers case, the problem is a lack of plans. I've bought plans for both the boats I built because it makes building easier. For both boats, the plans were in the book. This is generous of the author considering he earns some income from plan sales. In the second case, materials price seems to be the problem. The book was published in '85, so some inflation should be allowed for. Even so, for half of his total investment, the materials for that particular boat could have been bought including epoxy adhesive and bronze oar fittings. The author also points the several levels of materials that can be used to build these boats, explaining how this affects the finished boat. Another thing the author points out is that boatbuilding takes imagination and perserverance. A lack of both of thse traits is the real problem facing the two reviewers.
If you want to build a Bolger instant boat, this book is great to have on hand. The author helped work the bugs out of these designs. You can't get better help than that.

Chris-Craft (Enthusiast Color) Review

Compared to the Rodengen Legend of CC book this one has a great variety of pictures of many models. Even Kit boats. Its not as big but then again not as expensive either. I am very happy to have another excellent CC book for the coffee table of my boat.
