Along the Edge of America Review

I enjoyed the book, though I had some problems with it. These had nothing to do with Jenkins' writing, which was superb. Rather, the whole "adventure" he writes about seems to have been orchestrated simply so that he could write a book about it. Unlike "A Walk Across America" which was written as an afterthought (since he planned his walk for its own sake, not because he wanted to write about it), "Along the Edge" seems a bit forced. Though he gives reasons for wanting to check out the coast, we can see that he was just looking for a unique adventure that he could write about.
Yes, I agree that this is what he does for a living, and why shouldn't he seek out another adventure? But this one lacked the magic of his other adventures. That said, most of the people he met in this book have fascinating stories to tell. The book is definitely worth reading--even if it takes some 80 pages of describing his preparations and training before he actually sets off.

A Voyage Toward Vengeance Review

I read a lot of murder mysteries. This isn't quite that, as one learns early on who the killers are; it's more a suspense novel whose villains are murderers. It is also definitely a sea story. And underlying the whole thing is a theme of meditation on aging and the need for family and purpose at any age. Yes, that sounds like a lot of different things, but believe me it all works well. The complexity of the characters and the book's construction is very engaging.
It is fascinating to watch the slow convergence of Bill Stroud, our hero, with the villains. Bill finds his purpose and sets out on his quest early in the book; he brings all his flaws (a generalized hostility toward the world and a boatload of bitterness among them) along for the ride. But he is a fundamentally good man, and a competent one, and his approach to his quest is methodical. I was not at all sure how it would end (and stayed up till 4 am to find out that my guesses were incorrect) - but I trusted Bill, and had faith that in some way he would triumph. As a sailor, I loved the way Bill's boat almost became another character, as it was her seaworthiness that determined, in large part, the outcome of the voyage.
A great read - engaging characters and locations, described so that I could clearly see them; suspense without irritating misdirection; several laugh-out-loud moments when Bill said just the right thing; a resolution to this voyage that left me wondering what Bill and his friend Lydia will be doing next. I would think anyone who likes well written suspense would enjoy this book, and it will be a special pleasure to the sailors of the world.

Home is Where the Boat Is Review

Emy Thomas is a remarkable woman who spent a remarkable 13 years of her life living a dream. The book is at times both journalistic and narrative, and while it often follows a "how-to" format, it is also an entertaining anecdote of an experience most of us would love to have had. This is a great, quick read, and very entertaining.

Hobo-Ing America: A Workingman's Tour Of The U.S.A. Review

Hobo-ing America
Book Review
By Richard E. Noble
This was the most exciting adventure in our lives and despite all the conversation, very few people actually do what Carol and I did. We sold everything we owned, including Carol's little MG Midget; bought a van and hit the road, Jack. We left our secure lives in 1976 and the adventure never stopped. I was managing restaurants and Carol was a respiratory therapist working the emergency room at a Miami hospital.
When our initial adventure capital ran out, we were reading "the Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. We were inspired. Why couldn't we get crazy migrant/hobo type jobs and continue traveling across America? We did. And that is where this book begins - in a farm labor bureau employment office in California. We were signing up to go "top onions" with all the poor contract laborers and illegal immigrants. The interviewer thought we were nuts.
I subtitled this book "a workingman's adventure." That is not quite fair to Carol who also lived a "workingman's" life. She didn't sit back at the van baking cup cakes. She climbed 20 ft. ladders to pluck oranges from the top of thorny oranges trees; she tonged oysters from the bottom of Apalachicola Bay, she topped onions crawling around on her hands and knees in the desert like sun of southern California; she did a "man's" work as they say.

We are both now well into our 60's and as I review this book and our adventure, I must say I found a girl who was one in a million. Carol can gripe with God over what she was given but I certainly have no justified complaints on the girl he sent to me.
We had so much fun on this adventure that I felt compelled to write a book about it. Our adventure began in 1976 and ended in an ice cream parlor in Carrabelle, Florida in the year 2000. That's where the book ends but our adventure is still in progress.
Deciding to pack up and leave Fort Lauderdale and our steady, dependable jobs and lives to have a little adventure before we were too old to enjoy it, was truly a monumental decision. It changed our lives and it changed us ... for the better.

When I compare this to other travel books and I have read them all - "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac or Charles Karualt, Mark Twain's many travel books, "the Dove," "Walking Across America," "Blue Highways," "Travels with Charlie" by John Steinbeck, "Notes from a Small Island" by Bill Bryson, I think "Hobo-ing America" stands out as somewhat unique. We worked our way around this country. We weren't on a sabbatical or a scholarship. We weren't getting a check from National Geographic. We worked and we worked hard doing jobs that the majority of Americans wouldn't do on a dare.
There are only two other books that I think compare with "Hobo-ing America" in this regard, "Two Years before the Mast" by William Henry Dana and "Pages from a Worker's Life" by William Z. Foster. Those two guys also put in some sweat.
This is a fun book. It is written as Mark Twain advised, without the author forgetting his sense of humor. Carol and I had great fun and met bunches of lovable and very interesting people. It was the experience of a lifetime for both Carol and I. We both hope you will buy a copy and enjoy reading it. Good luck on your upcoming adventure.

Travels of Dursmirg: Summers at Daufuskie (Volume 2) Review

And some folks thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea
Who hasn't daydreamed about chucking it all and sailing away on a boat to warmer climes, "far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife"? John and Jane Grimsrud did just that. During five years while working full-time, they attended maritime and vo-tech classes and built a 46-foot ferrocement sailboat in their back yard. Whatever didn't fit in the boat, they sold. Their first days on the water gave them plenty of reasons to second-guess their decision - 80 knot winds, boat plowing into seas up to the mast, smashing into a tug, a life-threatening injury. But they persevered, and thrived.
Travels of Dursmirg is a 3-volume set that chronicles the challenges and joys of life on a sailboat. You'll travel the Golden Isles, the Indian River Lagoon and the Florida Keys. You'll meet the members of the sailing community - some pleasant, some rogues, all interesting. If you've dreamed of escaping the conventional by living on a sailboat but never got the chance, Travels of Dursmirg is your opportunity to experience this life vicariously. Grab a beer (or homemade sassafras wine), hop in a hammock, and be transported to a different existence.

Yarns Review

Not surprisingly, I learned about Tristan Jones' writing pretty early in my career as a cruising sailor. I even read a couple of his books, many years ago. I believe they were his stories about _Ice_ and _The Incredible Voyage_.
After reading them, I made a vow never to read any more Tristan Jones. My reason? There were enough of what I considered to be serious exaggerations in his "fact-tellings" for me to be able to trust anything else he wrote. What was really true (and, therefore, useful knowledge for a novice cruising skipper) and what was not, I could not decipher. I was looking for a practical cruising mentor, not a story-teller.
Since then, I've cruised 50,000 nautical miles over eleven years. I'm now confident enough in my "cruising skills" to appreciate the storyteller in Tristan Jones. And what a superb story-teller he was. This book is a delightful collection of (exactly as the title indicates) YARNS. Seafaring yarns: real life adventures (or quasi-reasonable recollections of the same) worth their weight in gold.
Tristan Jones is long gone now. Only his stories survive. More to the point, the "style" of sailboat cruising about which he writes is a rapidly disappearing phenomenon. Try finding a sextant or reduction tables on any modern yacht, or a lead line, let alone someone who knows how to use them. They've gone the way of sliderules; replaced by the GPS, small-boat radars, electronic depth sounders, laptop computers with charting software, refrigeration, solar panels, over-sized auxillary engines, . . . the list goes on and on. "Cruising" has rapidly metamorphized into a hi-tech adventure, with the bulk of the fleet more interested in staying close to shore and a marina than venturing out upon the world's vast open seas.
The adventures of the "old time cruisers," the ilk of Tristan Jones, Hal Roth, the Smeetons and Pardeys, are rapidly becoming cultural treasures. Their experiences are unlikely to be repeated in the future. But, like good folk music, they will be remembered from generation to generation. Among seafarers, they are already legends.
In the case of Tristan Jones, there may be no better place to start than this book of YARNS.

It's Uphill Most of the Way Down Review

The north is not a winter wonderland; it is, in fact, potentially deadly. "It's Uphill Most of the Way Down" is a memoir of a young man who accepted a dangerous northern exploration job at the tail end of the sixties. He reflects on the lessons he learned and the daily struggles he faced just staying alive during the expedition, and grants a vivid picture of northern exploration. "It's Uphill Most of the Way Down" is poignant and intriguing reading all the way through.

After reading Lionheart years ago, I knew I had to read Kijana. Once again Jesse Martin and Ed Gannon did a great job with this book! While reading it, I felt like I was part of the crew since all the descriptions were so vivid. Jesse is my all time favorite adventurer and he helped me discover inside me an enormous sense of adventure and also encouraged me to follow it.

Secret Agents Four (Adventure Library) Review

I read this book over and over when I was a kid. It's a great story. However, I have a new appreciation for it now. Given the terrorist threat that we now face, this book was eerily prescient. It deals with sleeper spies and poisoning a town's milk supply, a scenario that is not as far-fetched as it used to be. Somehow, over time, Donald Sobol no longer seems like just a great kid's books author - he seems to have predicted the future.

It is as if James Bond becomes a Sea Gypsy and retires to the Caribbean! Packed with humorous ribald partying, a wide assortment of corruption and evil, strong and lasting friendships with love lost, and a frightening tropical storm, Gary Brown's novel is a perfect way to dig your feet into the sand, fill a bucket with cold beers, and read. Or position your favorite reading chair near the fireplace where ever you live, and dream of the Caribbean.

Tales of a Sea Gypsy Review

Tales of a Sea Gypsy was an enjoyable book to read and as a cruising sailor it was refreshing to read great stories and not the "how too" or "what I did on my summer vacation" usual. Ray Jason's writing style keeps you interested, is easy to read and very, very funny. I recommend a cruise through these mini adventures for any diehard cruiser and the many "I wish I was doing that" sailors everywhere.

Sex, Lies & Spinnakers Review

This is a great mystery-thriller. The setting is a small sailboat in Mexico and points west. There is plenty of action (sex, lies, murder and mayhem) to keep the reader interested. It can be enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike. The author has obviously done a lot of research on boating and on the geography in which the story takes place. His attention to detail made me want to buy a sailboat and sail across the Pacific. As a reader, I felt like I was a part of the action on the boat, and there is plenty of action. The ending will keep you reading and wondering right up to the conclusion.

The Mosquito Coast Review

Paul Theroux never repeats himself and what he chooses to present in each book is quaranteed to surprise anyone who has read any of his other books. In this novel, part travelogue/adventure and part American social critique, the chief character is one of the most fascinating and least likeable figures I have encountered in recent fiction. An American genius with no patience for the opinions of anyone else and a hatred for most of modern life, determines to take his family into the jungles of South America, where he sees himself becoming something of a saviour to the natives - bringing them a few simple forms of technology that will uplift and transform their lives. Instead, he plunges himself and his family into a hell of conflicts that he doesn't even try to understand.
The story, told from the point of view of his initially adoring (and fearful) son, follows the decline in the family's fortunes until it is clear that it is the father himself who is their real enemy. A tragic and deeply moving tale, this book stays in the mind - not always pleasantly - long after it has been read.

Sailing in Stitches Review

What agony. There is nothing worth reading in this "book.' To read Sailing in Stitches is to peruse a cranky coots' personal list of intense dislikes. That's it.
John Cocker is a self-absorbed bore. There is not an interesting sentence to be found. It isn't just the lack of content, either--the writing is execrable (Ex: He leaves Dominica, "passes along the coast of Costa Rica"-- on the way to St Thomas (!!!!?)
Pity the poor souls who slaved on the boat for him and THEN also had to pay--both in silver and by having to remain, trapped on the boat,
in the presence of this oafish lout.
I had so looked forward to reading this--it is extremely discouraging to find that there is nothing here but a constant trickle of spleen.
yuk.

St Vincent and the Grenadines (Macmillan Caribbean Guides) Review

This is a good over view book that expands, but does not replace an excellent travel annual published by the St. Vincent travel bureau. The author is explicit about specific companies and people who can render service, such as diving. She also updates situations that may have changed since recorded in an older travel book. She clearly loves the islands and this comes through. Not expensive, and well worth adding. Books about St. Vincent are few enough.
