Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat: A Guide to Essential Features, Handling, and Gear Review

In The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat, author John Vigor covers the requirements for any sailboat venturing beyond coastal waters. He first defines what makes a boat suitable for offshore sailing, then provides a virtual checklist of improvements that can "harden" a boat in order to meet the requirements for heavy weather sailing. In one chapter there is are 56 questions to test the fitness of any boat. The final score on this test helps the sailor determine whether or not a boat is blue water capable. He also addresses the operation of a boat on a long voyage, and what should be expected in the way of weather. Provisioning is also addressed in this book. An appendix covers the Catalina 27, a model that has over 6000 boats manufactured. His assesment is that this boat is the "Volkswagen Beetle" of the boating world, and is a very seaworthy choice for it's price and size. He tells of Patrick Childress making a solo circumnavigation in a Catalina 27. Any boat owner contemplating a long offshore cruise would be well advised to read this book before venturing out without making the improvements suggested.

Seraffyn's Mediterranean Adventure Review

This was my first book I have read which is a narrative on what it is like to cruise for years in the Mediterranean on a 24 foot sail boat. I am planning on a 3 month cruise in the summer of 2002 and wanted info on what it is like. The Authors had a good mix of experiences from Lessons-learned, weather/seas in the Western/Central Med, and alot of good narrative about the people they meant in a variety of ports. It was just what I wanted to understand what the experience is like. I was a little disapointed when the book stopped short of the Greek Island which is where I am planning on going. Over all, if you are thinking of cruising and want a little feel of it with out ocean spray, this is the book for you...

Sell Up & Sail Review

Despite the title, there is very little practical advice in this book about actually selling up and sailing. It is largely paranoid ranting about European bureaucracy, racist opinions towards all who are not British (Italians are thieves, Albanians murderers, Greeks - "despite their failings"- not so bad, and Americans.... well...). In addition to little on planning the big move and living the dream, there is almost nothing on sailing itself. Compared to Hal Roth's writings these are very light indeed. The authors seem to know this and bring up Hal for the purpose of ridicule because he prefers to use sail rather than the engine more often than they. Victualing covers some unique options such as salted horse tongue and pickled pigs feet. I bring up these obscure examples as they are not minor variations in the type of subject coverage and unless this is what you are after, you will not learn too much on feeding yourself. Unless you want to sail on a barge or a one-off custom designed boat, once again you will learn nothing. Production boats are ridiculed and there is no serious coverage on the subject of boat selection.
As another reviewer noted, the coverage on navigation and electronics is close to zero, and on non-electronic navigation limited to mentioning one author is an ex-professional and the the other took a course on the subject.
Finally, the most annoying feature is the author's complete lack of concern for the environment and their active ranting against the 'environmental nuts' that don't let them dump their sewerage in harbors ("fish crap too" is the logic here), use halon based fire suppressant or use toxic bottom paints- there is even an allusion to eco nuts interfering with legitimate sailing pastimes such as carving whale teeth as a hobby. The book is not in front of me at this moment- but I believe my quotes to be accurate. I am unwilling to read it again to make sure.
The authors may have spent a long time living on the sea but purchasing this book will do little other than to help prolong their ability to do so- it will not help the reader prepare or enjoy their own adventures as- in my opinion- such a book should. Mine is for sale if somebody wants it...

Sailing in Stitches Review

What agony. There is nothing worth reading in this "book.' To read Sailing in Stitches is to peruse a cranky coots' personal list of intense dislikes. That's it.
John Cocker is a self-absorbed bore. There is not an interesting sentence to be found. It isn't just the lack of content, either--the writing is execrable (Ex: He leaves Dominica, "passes along the coast of Costa Rica"-- on the way to St Thomas (!!!!?)
Pity the poor souls who slaved on the boat for him and THEN also had to pay--both in silver and by having to remain, trapped on the boat,
in the presence of this oafish lout.
I had so looked forward to reading this--it is extremely discouraging to find that there is nothing here but a constant trickle of spleen.
yuk.

Paul and Sheryl Shard built their own boat and sailed it to the Bahamas. That was the original plan, and then they kept on going! They sailed to Europe and back to Toronto via Brazil, and the Caribbean.
They have been cruising for 10 years now, and are living the dream of many. Rather than a week here and there, or even a year sabbatical, they manage to cruise about six months a year, writing, and filming for their TV show.
This book has been updated and reflects the kind of knowledge that is only gained but doing again and again. They have the right attitude and obviously have found something that works. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to turn their dreaming into reality.

It has multiple pages for each boat (ie Bristol 40 has a 6 page review), speaking to design criteria, construction quality, interviews with the manufacturers. It's more than simply a reiteration of the manufacturers brochure. It reviews by sailing performance, engine, construction, interior, with layout diagrams, and price history. It also speaks to the relative merit of the boats "this is not a 40 ft boat in the modern sense....if you go below, you'll swear you stepped onto a 33 ft boat-at least if you're used to looking at the 33 footer built today" with a critical review. It has almost every monohull made, but only a few of the smaller cruising multihulls.

While some of the information is a bit dated (no GPS, for instance)there is good, solid, readable stuff here, everything from sleeping bags to celestial navigation, recipes to emergency repairs. Hiscock had real hands on, been there experience, circumnavigating (with his wife Susan) several times.
Far too many cruising books are of the "Oh, cut loose and have fun" type which can be more than a little dangerous. Collections of carefree cruising stories and anecdotes. Cruising Under Sail something else, serious, proven stuff that Hiscock has collected from among the most successful cruising sailors.

This is the second of 4 books in the Pardey's Serrafyn series which describes their many year wanderings around the world on their small wooden sailboat. Both my wife and I read the first ("Cruising with Seraffyn") and had to pick up this next volume. The Pardeys have a very easy and relaxed writing style. Reading these books makes you feel like you are friends with them and enjoying the ride vicariously. They are enjoyable for the both the real and armchair sailor alike.
