The Complete Sailor: Learning the Art of Sailing Review

I bought this book, as well as "Sailing for Dummies" and "Learning to Sail - the Annapolis sailing school guide for all ages", and I have to say, the Complete Sailor is the worst of the three, at least for someone who has no previous knowledge of sailing. It was an interesting book with a wide variety of topics covered, but I think it would be better suited to someone with at least a basic knowledge of how to sail. If you truly want to LEARN to sail, the Annapolis book is the best and simplest of the three, particularly if you're learning on a dinghy like me.

Sailing: The Basics: The Book That Has Launched Thousands Review

Contrary to the other reviews, I don't agree that this is "what you need to know if you don't know anything about sailing". As an example, in Chapter 1 page 13 after a brief comparison of "centerboard" or "keel" boats and a very brief touch on "rigging", the author starts to talk about how to go about "bending on the sails".
Without as much as a description or definition of the terms, he says:
"To rig the mainsail, first find the clew of the sail and, clew first, feed the foot boltrope into the groove in the boom. Attach the tack cringle (grommet or hole) to the appropriate fitting on the gooseneck (the place where the boom joins the mast), then attach the outhaul to the clew cringle and tighten it. Run your hands along the luff from the tack to the head to ensure that it is not twisted, then attach the main halyard to the head of the sail and feed the luff rope into the groove in the mast. As you do this, pull the other end of the halyard and secure it so the first couple of feet of luff rope stay in the mast groove. Insert the battens into their pockets."
Good luck with that, and good sailing.

Sail Away: A Guide to Outfitting and Provisioning for Cruising Review

Paul and Sheryl Shard built their own boat and sailed it to the Bahamas. That was the original plan, and then they kept on going! They sailed to Europe and back to Toronto via Brazil, and the Caribbean.
They have been cruising for 10 years now, and are living the dream of many. Rather than a week here and there, or even a year sabbatical, they manage to cruise about six months a year, writing, and filming for their TV show.
This book has been updated and reflects the kind of knowledge that is only gained but doing again and again. They have the right attitude and obviously have found something that works. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to turn their dreaming into reality.

Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Started Sailing Review

This is a great, easy-to-read book of sailors' "lessons learned," written by a man with much more experience at sea than most of us will ever have. It is not a book intended to teach you how to sail, but one with the intent of telling you how to avoid problems, both on and off the water. It is organized alphabetically, by subject, and the end of the book includes many useful tables, formulas, etc., that you might not easily find anywhere else. It covers various preventive techniques, ways to correct problems if they do occur, and things that merchants and repairmen might never tell you unless you know to ask. I also like that this book includes a fair amount of humor, and that the subjects covered are not all purely technical. Vigor goes so far as to address the phenomenon of "hearing voices" at sea, various superstitions, and even how to rename a boat in a way that doesn't cause it to become unlucky. This is a great little book and is well worth the price

Ready for Sea: How to Outfit the Modern Cruising Sailboat and Prepare Your Vessel and Yourself for Extended Passage-Making and Living Aboard Review

Tor Pinney's Ready For Sea! is a practical, thorough, "user friendly" guide to outfitting a cruising sailboat and preparing oneself for the joy of extended sail journeys, or living abroad on a cruise. Individual chapters address safety on the waves; every part of a sailboat from sails to galley; mechanical considerations; and much more. Enhanced with illustrations by Bruce Bingham, Ready For Sea! is a "must-read" for anyone seriously planning a sailing voyage, whether it be a simple day-trip excursion or an around the world adventure.
