Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere Review

This book is an excellent starting point for those trying to wade through the ocean of sailboats available on the used market, who want to get "the most bang for their buck." The reader should come away with at least several favories, allowing him/her to narrow the search for the "perfect" boat. At the same time, other boats will be stricken from the list of possibilites because of information contained in this book. It is aimed at the person who wants to get out there and sail on the best boat possible, but must shop carefully due to budget considerations. The short descriptions and comparisons of the boats are helpful, as are the details of the "known weaknesses," and interviews with owners. I just wish the book could have profiled more than 20 sailboats, I hated to reach the end. As a companion to this book, I would recommend "Inspecting The Aging Sailboat" by Don Casey. I would buy this book again.

Used Boat Notebook: From the Pages of Sailing Magazine, Reviews of 40 Used Boats Plus a Detailed Look at Ten Great Used Boats to Sail Around the World Review

This book is a fantastic resource that is broken down into easy to assimilate categories:
* First Impressions
* Construction
* What To Look For
* On Deck
* Down Below
* Engine
* Underway, and
* Conclusions
Each of these categories are covered in depth, but I found the construction and what to look for most interesting. As I write this, I am currently shopping for a new boat with a friend and reading each review is like sitting down with a knowledgeable person that owns each boat.
In addition to the areas covered above, there is also a great summary and Sailing Magazine Value Guide that covers: Price, design quality, construction quality, user-friendliness, safety, typical condition, refitting, support, availability, investment and resale, and overall 'SVG' rating.
The only criticism I have is that the author is definitely biased in what he likes and doesn't like and makes it apparent while reading. He is extremely qualified in his opinions, but they are just that - opinions. So just keep that in mind while reading and buy based upon what YOU want, not just what the author likes.
That said, that is also what gives the author credibility. His reviews are not just 'glam-shots' of the boats. Each boat and it's shortcomings are discussed, but the boat is not simply shot down.
Would I buy a boat without reading this book in-depth? No way. This book is well worth the money even if you are not buying a boat as it will help you look at your current boat with some new ideas.

Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat Review

While the subject matter is excellent, the authours opinion is too prevalent.
JD Cardwell considers all sailboats under 22' as "not really cruisers". There are many on the water that would disagree. While a bigger trailerable may be more comfortable, it's also harder to tow, and more expensive.
The authour needlessly runs the risk of pushing the dream beyond the scope of those with limited resources.
This book may be considered valuable by those with or considering boats between 22 to 26 feet, but probably not to others.
Lastly, the authour obviously places more importance on creature comfort than seaworthiness, O.K. for the marina crowd, but offensive to the true cruising sailor.

This is a must buy for anyone searching for a small cruising sailboat or larger daysailor under 26' including most mid-sized trailer boats. The author has an extensive and admirable background in the field of monohull sail boats and shares his love for the hobby in this fine compilation exhibiting hundreds of sailboat specs and drawings. Many sailors have strong opinions about boats they've owned and loved but Henkel gives us the basic facts and leaves the fluff to the manufacturers brag sheets. Well presented and good for many hours of armchair sailboat research. Your eyes will be opened to many fine small boats you didn't know existed.
As an avid former catamaran sailor myself, beachcat sailors must know that a "cruising boat" and small catamarans are two completely different beasts. The title of this fine work says it all so don't expect what it doesn't promote. Fair winds.

I have been a trailor sailor for many years, and have bought most of the books of the subject over the years. This is the most comprehensive book on CRUISING trailor sailors to come out. It brings the problem of big trailor sailors that are very difficult to trailor and launch to the fore. One warning, the displacements listed at the end of the book are those provided by the manufacturers. They usually do not include the weight of trailor, sails, mast/boom, equipment,and are often still faked lower than they really are. For example, I looked at the Telstar last year which is listed in the book and by the manufacturer as 3000lbs, but owners had taken theirs to commercial scales and measured them as being close to 7000lbs. This goes for most of the boats listed.

Rich Johnson's Guide to Trailer Boat Sailing Review

As a young old salt, I've ridden the waves enough times to know a good guide when I see one. This book taught me a few things, even though I thought I knew everything. I also like the stories in the second half of the book. The tech parts are very enlightening and the adventures he and his family have bring back lots of memories. The breezy writing style made the tech parts easy to take, and the stories were both lessons learned and funny. The book is every bit as good as his wilderness guide, and I'll keep them both by my side.
