Seraffyn's Mediterranean Adventure Review

This was my first book I have read which is a narrative on what it is like to cruise for years in the Mediterranean on a 24 foot sail boat. I am planning on a 3 month cruise in the summer of 2002 and wanted info on what it is like. The Authors had a good mix of experiences from Lessons-learned, weather/seas in the Western/Central Med, and alot of good narrative about the people they meant in a variety of ports. It was just what I wanted to understand what the experience is like. I was a little disapointed when the book stopped short of the Greek Island which is where I am planning on going. Over all, if you are thinking of cruising and want a little feel of it with out ocean spray, this is the book for you...

Not surprisingly, I learned about Tristan Jones' writing pretty early in my career as a cruising sailor. I even read a couple of his books, many years ago. I believe they were his stories about _Ice_ and _The Incredible Voyage_.
After reading them, I made a vow never to read any more Tristan Jones. My reason? There were enough of what I considered to be serious exaggerations in his "fact-tellings" for me to be able to trust anything else he wrote. What was really true (and, therefore, useful knowledge for a novice cruising skipper) and what was not, I could not decipher. I was looking for a practical cruising mentor, not a story-teller.
Since then, I've cruised 50,000 nautical miles over eleven years. I'm now confident enough in my "cruising skills" to appreciate the storyteller in Tristan Jones. And what a superb story-teller he was. This book is a delightful collection of (exactly as the title indicates) YARNS. Seafaring yarns: real life adventures (or quasi-reasonable recollections of the same) worth their weight in gold.
Tristan Jones is long gone now. Only his stories survive. More to the point, the "style" of sailboat cruising about which he writes is a rapidly disappearing phenomenon. Try finding a sextant or reduction tables on any modern yacht, or a lead line, let alone someone who knows how to use them. They've gone the way of sliderules; replaced by the GPS, small-boat radars, electronic depth sounders, laptop computers with charting software, refrigeration, solar panels, over-sized auxillary engines, . . . the list goes on and on. "Cruising" has rapidly metamorphized into a hi-tech adventure, with the bulk of the fleet more interested in staying close to shore and a marina than venturing out upon the world's vast open seas.
The adventures of the "old time cruisers," the ilk of Tristan Jones, Hal Roth, the Smeetons and Pardeys, are rapidly becoming cultural treasures. Their experiences are unlikely to be repeated in the future. But, like good folk music, they will be remembered from generation to generation. Among seafarers, they are already legends.
In the case of Tristan Jones, there may be no better place to start than this book of YARNS.

The Incredible Voyage: A Personal Odyssey Review

Inspiration is a personal matter in that what may inspire one, may not inspire another. For me, this book has left an indelible mark that has propelled me for the last 12 years - it's been that long since I've read it. Since that time however, I've been an advid reader and I have yet to find a book that can rival it.
Tristan, who died several years ago, was an unabashed old salt that lived by his own rules. He was unapologetic in his ways, which made him an entertaining man to take you on this incredible voyage. The book is less about seafaring (as a disappointed reader indicates below) and much more about incredible experiences in amazing places.
Suffice it to say that this book inspired me to pick up and travel around the world, learn to sail and cruise the Caribbean, and even name my son after him. How's that for being inspired? Most of all, it inspired me to go out and create my own adventures in life. After all, life is the voyage that Tristan was writing about.

David and Daniel Hays are the first Americans to sail around Cape Horn in a boat under 30 feet in length. "My Old Man and the Sea" is the inspiring true story of a father and son's 17,000-mile voyage in a 25-foot yacht named Sparrow to the bottom of the world and back.
Although David and Dan sailed the easier route from the Pacific into the Atlantic with the prevailing westerly winds and currents they endured horrific storms that included Dan being tossed overboard during Sparrows dangerous sideways roll.
The tale is even more impressive when you learn that they chose to sail simply, without an engine and used a sextant and compass instead of a navigational system. David explains, "Our sport is to tune our senses not our instruments."
David and Dan's eloquent descriptions of the magnificence of the ocean and the magic of sailing brought back fond memories of my own six-month adventure hitchhiking on sailboats in the Bahamas. Like them, I was inspired to write a book titled "Earth, the Forgotten Temple." Tales concerning profound encounters with Mother Ocean and her other wilderness places need to be shared.
Most moving of all, despite conflicts, the deep love between the father and the son shine through to warm us all.

Sailing Through Paradise: The Illustrated Adventures of a Single-handed Sailor Review

If you've read Tristan Jones, Harry Pigeon, Joshua Slocum or Frank Mulville, you may be disappointed in this one. Harris' account has plenty of factual detail that would be useful as a cross-check to other Caribbean cruising guides, such as the Van Sant he mentions. Unfortunately, I got the feeling he was more interested in getting the voyage over than savoring the experieces and people he meets.
The sailing purist will wince at the author's persistant reliance on power in anything less favorable than a beam reach. Also, I was surprised that he would knowingly attempt a Gulf Stream crossing with an inadequate reefing system and a defective auto pilot. This is not a book for cruising beginners (like myself) looking for pointers on seamanship.
I found the book stylistically monotonous with its persistant use of present tense, active voice and picture captions that are direct quotes from the text. A good, frank editor could have made this account more enjoyable.

I read volumes I and II, expecting to continue with the subsequent numerous volumes of what I thought would be an exciting tale of a world cruise. The writing leaves something to be desired, and having spent time in many of the Caribbean locations that were referenced, there were a number of inaccuracies. I anticipated a possible eventful story of sailing across the Atlantic, and much to my disappointment, the boat was transported by carrier ship. While the continuing volumes may be worth reading, my disallusionment with the first two volumes was a no-question end.

Cruising Under Sail Review

While some of the information is a bit dated (no GPS, for instance)there is good, solid, readable stuff here, everything from sleeping bags to celestial navigation, recipes to emergency repairs. Hiscock had real hands on, been there experience, circumnavigating (with his wife Susan) several times.
Far too many cruising books are of the "Oh, cut loose and have fun" type which can be more than a little dangerous. Collections of carefree cruising stories and anecdotes. Cruising Under Sail something else, serious, proven stuff that Hiscock has collected from among the most successful cruising sailors.

This book is one of the few books that portrays not only the classic aspects of human adventure but the more philosiphical underpinnings of our own life experiences in the clutter of modern civilization. Time on Ice will not only take you to antarctica, but to the desolation and isolation experienced therin. The moments of beauty, excitement, distress and love all connect at a very human level. I would recomend this book to anyone, something i have never done before.

Seraffyn's European Adventure Review

This is the second of 4 books in the Pardey's Serrafyn series which describes their many year wanderings around the world on their small wooden sailboat. Both my wife and I read the first ("Cruising with Seraffyn") and had to pick up this next volume. The Pardeys have a very easy and relaxed writing style. Reading these books makes you feel like you are friends with them and enjoying the ride vicariously. They are enjoyable for the both the real and armchair sailor alike.
