A Voyage Toward Vengeance Review

I read a lot of murder mysteries. This isn't quite that, as one learns early on who the killers are; it's more a suspense novel whose villains are murderers. It is also definitely a sea story. And underlying the whole thing is a theme of meditation on aging and the need for family and purpose at any age. Yes, that sounds like a lot of different things, but believe me it all works well. The complexity of the characters and the book's construction is very engaging.
It is fascinating to watch the slow convergence of Bill Stroud, our hero, with the villains. Bill finds his purpose and sets out on his quest early in the book; he brings all his flaws (a generalized hostility toward the world and a boatload of bitterness among them) along for the ride. But he is a fundamentally good man, and a competent one, and his approach to his quest is methodical. I was not at all sure how it would end (and stayed up till 4 am to find out that my guesses were incorrect) - but I trusted Bill, and had faith that in some way he would triumph. As a sailor, I loved the way Bill's boat almost became another character, as it was her seaworthiness that determined, in large part, the outcome of the voyage.
A great read - engaging characters and locations, described so that I could clearly see them; suspense without irritating misdirection; several laugh-out-loud moments when Bill said just the right thing; a resolution to this voyage that left me wondering what Bill and his friend Lydia will be doing next. I would think anyone who likes well written suspense would enjoy this book, and it will be a special pleasure to the sailors of the world.

They Started in MGs: Profiles of Sports Car Racers of the 1950s Review

This book is a group of seventy-nine thumbnail biographies of sports car racing drivers that started in MGs. Many, having returned from World War II, sought an economical car to participate in racing events. You'll recognize many of the names from Wacky Arnolt to Doc Wylie. Included are more than 100 pictures. It is an easy and enjoyable read because of the conversational style of the writer. Goodwin will be recognized from his writings in a wide variety of automotive publications.

Caribbean High Review

It is as if James Bond becomes a Sea Gypsy and retires to the Caribbean! Packed with humorous ribald partying, a wide assortment of corruption and evil, strong and lasting friendships with love lost, and a frightening tropical storm, Gary Brown's novel is a perfect way to dig your feet into the sand, fill a bucket with cold beers, and read. Or position your favorite reading chair near the fireplace where ever you live, and dream of the Caribbean.

Tales of a Sea Gypsy Review

Tales of a Sea Gypsy was an enjoyable book to read and as a cruising sailor it was refreshing to read great stories and not the "how too" or "what I did on my summer vacation" usual. Ray Jason's writing style keeps you interested, is easy to read and very, very funny. I recommend a cruise through these mini adventures for any diehard cruiser and the many "I wish I was doing that" sailors everywhere.

Sex, Lies & Spinnakers Review

This is a great mystery-thriller. The setting is a small sailboat in Mexico and points west. There is plenty of action (sex, lies, murder and mayhem) to keep the reader interested. It can be enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike. The author has obviously done a lot of research on boating and on the geography in which the story takes place. His attention to detail made me want to buy a sailboat and sail across the Pacific. As a reader, I felt like I was a part of the action on the boat, and there is plenty of action. The ending will keep you reading and wondering right up to the conclusion.

Death in the Jungle, Diary of a Navy Seal Review

Speaking as a former member of the military i can tell you that this book tells it like it is. Unlike some of the other books of this type where the author either A: is a reporter and never served in the military or B: The author thinks that he is the best that ever was and that he was never afraid. The B type are usually entertaining but not very real. This is a great daily account of Gary's 1st tour in Vietnam. He tells it like it is from the rides to town through sniper fire to get a beer to the death the he caused and witnessed in the jungle. I have read many books about the Navy Seals both A and B versions and in my opinion this book is in a class by itself.

Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream Review

This is a wonderful book! One I will surely be giving as gifts to many of my Boomer friends who have even slightest interest in sailing. A combination of poetic philosophical musings (in the intro) and very practical advice on buying a boat, outfitting it and finally, the joys and challenges of sailing it!
Chapter 1 is an exciting and harrowing account of a crossing in the Sea of Cortez which, fortunately, through hard-earned experience, a well-outfitted boat, common sense and some good luck the Djoses survived intact and ready to write this book.
The Djoses are a couple who celebrate the joys of sailing together thereby inspiring armchair sailors to set sail themselves. Highly recommended.

BELIZE SURVIVOR: Darker Side of Paradise Review

No slow spots in this story. The author has created a great sense of anticipation on nearly every page - what is going to happen next? She is also very talented in painting pictures with words; the characters are developed or portrayed very well. Much is said without a lot of embellishment; and the reader easily constructs the mental images that give the story texture.
This book was an inspiration for me to travel to see the coral reefs of the Caribbean, and the tropical forests of Central America. I just returned from a trip to a Caribbean island to explore coral reefs. While there, I met an old man who practices bush medicine. I plan to return as soon as possible to record the plants he uses and the practices of his herbal tradition before this knowledge is lost. If I hadn't read this book I never would have found this new mission and this new adventure.

The Man Beneath Lake Union Review

The Man Beneath Union Lake is my first taste of a micro-adventure book, and it has definitely whetted my appetite for more. C.L. Vaughn introduces us to Owen Ruger, a fearless adventurer who is not afraid to get in the middle of danger--especially when there is a beautiful woman needing his assistance. Vaughn jumps right into the action and never lets up until the last page of the book. If you love action/adventure books, then give Vaughn's The Man Beneath Union Lake a try. Be warned, however, these micro-adventures can become addictive. Let's hope that this isn't the last we see of Owen Ruger.

Belen Demise Review

This is the second of the Sage Trilogy that begins in The Sage when American adventures sailed to Panama and began searching for lost Spanish treasure on the Las Cruces Trail. Although they find the treasure, their vessel collides with a tanker in Gatun Lake and sinks.
In the Belen Demise, they return to Panama, recover the treasure from the sunken boat, and depart Panama in another vessel, only to have their efforts thwarted by PDF pursuers and a storm that forces them to take refuge in the mouth of the Rio Belen. In the process, they damage the vessel's propeller and have to scuttle her to keep the treasure hidden from scavengers.
The Final Quest, the third book of the Sage Trilogy, concludes the adventure with a final attempt to recover the treasure from their sunken vessel in the Rio Belen.
Throughout the trilogy, lust for gold is the main theme and how it changes those who come under its spell. In real life, I admire those individuals who persevered and pursued their dream in search of Spanish treasure. The characters portrayed in this triology, had similar dreams and persisted despite numerous setbacks in their quest for the elusive treasure. I salute all such adventurers, real or imaginary, and offer this simple toast: Here's to gold and all those who lust after it.

Living On Lightning Review

I really enjoyed Don Green's adventure story about a strong, daring man's challenges and triumphs to stay safe in a hazardous profession, to perform worthwhile work that truly served the public, and to make a living for his family. The dangerous profession of lineman is described in sometimes hair-raising (!) detail, which I found quite interesting as it was clear enough to understand.
I also liked the overall sense of historical context... this wasn't just one family's tale but a spotlight on them amid the very difficult time of the 1930's depression. The humor sprinkled throughout sealed the deal; this book is a real keeper!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Shock Wave (Dirk Pitt Adventures) Review

You have to take Clive Cussler's books for what they are. He presents his protagonist, Dirk Pitt, as a James Bond type hero except that he operates at sea. A very well written plot with a great ending, unique characters, intense action, make this novel one of Cussler's finest works that I've read so far. However, for some reason, people do not discuss this book as one of Cussler's finest works in the same vein as Sahara.
My only disappointment was that Julien Perlmutter, his obese marine historian, does not make any appearances. He's one of Cussler's most interesting characters.
I would definitely recommend Shockwave.

Williwaw Review

Tom Bodett's latest opus is a slender volume, and in fact it's really a longish novella. It has the same tone and pacing of his End of the Road tales.
The story concerns two young adolescent siblings, September and Ivan Crane. They live in the "bush" of Alaska, the wild and untamed areas far from power lines and telephone hookups. Their father, a commercial fisherman, must of necessity leave the children unattended for weeks at a stretch.
They stay in touch via radio communication, at least until Ivan fries the transceiver. Now, the kids have only a week to make enough money to repair the radio before Dad calls again. That means trips across Bag Bay, and in the autumn of the year, the dreaded, violent storms known as williwaw can spring up at a moment's notice. One such storm claimed the children's mother seven years before.
For a mainstream novel such as this, I was surprised at the total absence of any objectionable material. This book could fit very comfortably of a middle-school library shelf -- and yet it is not a "children's" book. This is a book for any reader who enjoys a page-turner.

In the Dark of the Night: A Novel Review

(SPOILER WARNING)
The idea of items that serial killers use containing a leftover "evil" power is a great idea. But Saul doesn't really use it much--he could have had the boys become "possessed" by the spirits of Lizzie Borden, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein, et al. But nothing really happens to the premise and the book concludes with "Lizzie" running amuck. (In fact, this was the real flaw in the book because the axe she was accussed of using was NEVER found.)
And other than the subject matter, this is really a YA novel -- the main characters are teenagers and the secondary story -- "townies" versus the "summer boys" -- is merely filler and goes nowhere.
Would have been much more interesting to see the ADULTS become slowly obsessed with the items. Again, interesting idea, just doesn't work.

Then with each ripple in the water, the plot become more in depth, even includes technical aspects that are truly remarkable if true. The reader finds hidden secrets and betrayals within this team of searchers, that cause the FBI agent especially, to keep a close eye on the rest of the party. Reading further along, it as though the winds are start blow and the wave start crashing against the surf and there is a need to hang on to something for dear live or be blown away. The Sitka Incident Review

Walt Larson sat across from me many days at our writers' critique group as we worked perfecting each other's manuscripts. One of them became this book, and it's powerful writing. He was a big man, with steel gray hair and hands like hams. He'd lived an interesting life - a merchant seaman, a fisherman in the wild and dangerous waters of the Pacific Northwest, a wanderer, a tug captain.
Walt was a Norwegian/Tlingit from Alaska. He was the tug pilot who towed the Exxon Valdez out of the Prince Edward Sound.
He, like his characters (raw, rough hewn Native Americans, and alcoholics) had known some really tragic times, and was proud of his sobriety. He freely shared that with us, with an offer to help anyone in need through AA.
I just came across this listing today, approximately five years after his death. This is a book worth reading. You will be pleased.
Walt was always very generous with his time and a prolific writer. He gave me the courage to pursue my own book, "Waltz on the Wild Side - An Animal Lover's Journal", and to contribute to "Least Loved Beasts of the Really Wild West - A Tribute".
I miss him.
You will thank me for suggesting you read "The Sitka Incident" and Walt's other novels. They are slice of life and full of grit. Heroes step from their last pages.
May (Lenzer) Lattanzio - Amazon Shorts author of "Paradise", "The Last Striper", "The Strange Adventure of Vernal Page", and more to come.

Arctic Drift (Import) Review

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of Dirk Pitt novels than me, and while the anxious 'sit & wait' attitude until the next adventure comes out has softened somewhat with the last 4-5 novels, I gotta admit that it's tough to beat an action-drenched sea-worthy drama like the type produced by the Cussler's.
After being totally UNDER-Whelmed by the cover of 'Arctic Drift' (easily one of the worst in the entire Pitt library), I began with earnest to get back to what I love to do most: become entirely entrenched into a world where NUMA is real and saving the world is as easy as turning the next page. This time around, a completely random discovery that may very well 100% reverse Global Warming has been discovered, only to have another nasty megalomaniac--this time around from Canada--attempt to block it in order to continue to rape the environment for profit, all the while doing his best to look like his company cares about being Green more than almost anyone.
Along the way, Dirk's children, Summer & Dirk Jr. have managed to stumble upon a dangerous arm of our nasty Canadian while doing otherwise boring research half-way to Alaska on the Canadian Coast. Of course everything becomes connected in only the way that Dirk & Co. can manage to be at the right place at the right time to help. The horrible Canadian has done his best to spark what could very well be a major conflict with America, one in which an armed response seems inevitable, and right in the middle: you guessed it...Dirk Jr., Dirk Sr., Summer & Al Giordino. Along the way we discover some interesting History revolving around the efforts to discover a North Passage near the North Pole and what lengths some people will go to in order to add a few million dollars more to their already outrageously huge personal fortune.
While the debate continues to rage about the validity of mans impact on Global Warming vs. a cyclical pattern that the earth adheres to which man simply cannot influence, one thing is certain: Dirk Pitt continues to provide a slam-bang fun ride, this time through the North West Territories.

Serpent: A Novel from the NUMA Files Review

I was (and always am) thrilled to see a new Clive Cussler book on the shelves...but was immediately skeptical because it wasn't in hardback. As many know, certain authors ALWAYS produce new novels in hardback, and lately, authors like Clancy, have lent their name to paperback novels who are written by 'other' people (OP Center), OBVIOUSLY less talented then they--and of course I wondered whether or not this was the case here with 'Serpent'. It didn't take long to recognize the trademark 'Cussler
Style' and as far as I could tell, it was just a novel about Dirk Pitt going by another name. With that said, I found the book VERY entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised that all the 'regular' elements of a fun and exciting Dirk Pitt novel were all there, including a sidekick (almost exactly like Al Giordino). Now this is only a SMALL complaint, since I have been an avid follower of Cussler since I read 'Raise The Titanic' shortly after it was published. I
have been hooked ever since, and since his 'style' has worked so far, it was just fine with me on this one as well. If you are struggling with the decision of buying this book, here's a suggestion: read it, and substitute Dirk Pit for Kurt Austin, do that every time you read it and TRUST me, you WON'T be able to tell the difference. And for all those who have negative comments about this book, they MUST have an attachment to Dirk that cannot be broken, because this is really a fun book. Don't get me wrong, nobody is gonna increase their IQ by reading this--or ANY other Cussler novel for that matter--but just like his past books, he provided me with several hours of escapism and fun, which is really the only reason why I read him to begin with, I have FUN while reading his stuff. Give it a try, and just remember, Kurt is just Dirk in disguise. Enjoy.

The Causeway Review

Peter Lihou's first novel, Rachel's Shoe, came out about a year ago and he said at the time that there was sequel to come. I'm very pleased it's finally come out as I found Rachels Shoe to be refreshing easy and entertaining to read. As a sequel to Rachel's Shoe, the story begins at a furious pace in Munich as the immediately identifiable arch-villain, Freddy, escapes from a police trap. Again he shows his cold blooded nature as he pursues his revenge for the loss of his fortune. The chase leads us back to the Channel Isles where a game of cat and mouse is played out, but done to a background of personal conflict of old and new morals and values, linking the past and present.
Peter has again used his command of the detail and mastery of story telling to transport his reader into another time and place where the reader is engulfed in the realistic drama taking place. I loved it and am happy to recommend it as a great read, intriguing and entertaining to the last page. Don't forget to keep an eye out for the reference to Lihou Island, a real-life story the author is yet to tell.
