B-24 Liberator Bomber Pilot's Flight Manual Review

This book is the generic flight manual for the B-24D, dated 15 September 1942. The H model on the book's cover photo was a poor choice (or ignorance) by Periscope. When I purchased it I was looking/hoping for something covering the later and more widely used G, H or J models. This book does have some good information in it, and if nothing else gives the reader an appreciation for how un-ergonomic and purely utilitarian combat aircraft were at the time. Crew comfort and efficiency were certainly not worth much in the designers' eyes. But if you are looking for some good details on operation of all the aircraft's systems including armament and interior layout, this isn't it.

Warped Wings Review

Last fall I reconnected with Steve Head an old friend and former co-worker of some 30 years. During one of our e-mail exchanges, Steve mentioned that his dad was an Author and had written several books under his real name of James Head. I was a little surprised as I couldn't remember Steve mentioning that his dad was an Author.
Knowing that I am an aviation nut, Steve saved the best for last when he informed me that the last book his dad had written before his death was about the early days of aviation. I asked Steve where I could get a copy and he said that he would arrange for me to get a copy. About two weeks later the book "Warped Wings" By James Head, arrived in the mail.
When I saw the title, my thoughts were that the book was about either an early airplane crash or about the very earliest airplanes designed by the Wright Brothers and others which used wing warping techniques to steer the aircraft. It turned out to be the latter as the book is about the Wright brothers and their patent war with Glen Curtiss over who really invented the airplane.
The book was very interesting with familiar names and the story of early aviation that I mostly knew. The story was easy to follow with a smooth flow and a high level of detail which included drawings and explanations of the issues and patents and I read the book in it's entirety in one sitting. I was very impressed with the research that went into the book and it's level of detail as the supporting documents are approximately 100 years old.
I don't think I am giving anything away when I say that most of us know that the Wrights won the patent war with Glen Curtiss and emerged as the inventors of the airplane but I think almost everyone will be surprised at exactly what the patent covered. Hint...It was not the airplane.

Air Disaster (Vol. 4: The Propeller Era) Review

The fourth installment in Macarthur Job's outstanding "Air Disaster" series of books focuses attention on "The Propeller Era" of commercial aviation accidents.
While not quite as intricately detailed as Volumes 1 through 3 in this series of aviation publications, Volume Four's 184 pages are still filled with many interesting-to-read accounts. There are 20 individual chapters here, covering a timespan of 1950 to 1971.
Prop plane accidents explored include two incidents on the very same day -- September 17, 1961 -- when a Northwest Airlines Lockheed L188 Electra went down in Chicago and a Transair Sweden DC-6 crashed in Northern Rhodesia.
Other air disasters that get a chapter in Volume 4 include the crash of an Eastern Airlines L188 Electra in Boston on October 4, 1960, a Northwest Orient Stratocruiser accident in Washington State on April 2, 1956, and another Stratocruiser accident suffered by Pan Am in October 1956.
Also included is a chapter covering the "Grand Canyon Collision" of June 30, 1956. This terrible accident took 128 lives as a TWA Super Constellation collided in mid-air with a United Airlines DC-7 above the Grand Canyon.
Featuring a wealth of vintage aircraft photographs from the pre-jet age of air travel, plus many excellent illustrations, charts, maps, and original artwork, Volume 4 of "Air Disaster", published in 2001, is yet another worthy addition to the library.

The Illustrated Directory of Modern American Weapons Review

This compact book for a fair price is nice lookup for anyone who what's to know a little more about all the weapons used by the US Army. The book contains many pictures and lots of interesting facts for each weapon system. Take for example the description of the daisy cutter (actually: BLU-82), the largest conventional bomb. It was all over in the news when the Afghanistan war was under way. If you read this nice booklet you will find that is not very new and actually an old bomb, already used in the Vietnam War. At that time it was used to create chopper-landing sites. The bomb leveled all the trees something that was other wise a dangerous and laborous job for the troops on the ground. I could find in the book all kinds of nice facts about all those other "CNN" weapon systems, the Predator drone, Hellfire missiles, Stinger rocket, M16 machine guns, and many more I never hearth off.
This book is certainly a value for money. But it is not perfect, because it contains no index or detailed contents, how weird!

This book is a must-have for all people interested in aviation of our "coldwar-eastern enemy". The often different approach of russian designers to aircraft design gave us some very surprising en extotic aircraft types. Much more than in the west, soviet aircraft were being designed and built for an operational purpose. The result often was an aircraft, very rugged and suited to it's operational requirements but often lacking in economic operations. Solutions were solutions, no mather how expensive or uneconomical. Off course some of the soviet aircraft are still unrivalled in their class. The IL76 is still one off the most rugged heavy transports and if you look at the technical propulsion system of the Lockheed X-35 S/VTOL demonstrator, one can see that it is directly derived from the YAK141 prototype. The russian designers often were much more practical in approach and with limited resources they achieved very much. This book contains them all. From the early "kites" till Ekranoplans! The definitive work on this subject!
