Inboard Racing: A Wild Ride Review
I just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it. I could feel the author's enthusiasm for the sport come through clearly, and even though (or because) it made me realize what a geek he is -- boat geek, gearhead, whatever you call it -- it was something I could definitely relate to. Probably because I'm a geek too, even though I'm too lazy to express it in the real world with actual mechanical equipment; I stick to the virtual world of programming and wikis and such.The book kept making me think of designing a computer game. Maybe it's boat racing, or maybe it's sci-fi where you surf the Jovian atmosphere or kayak the lava rivers on some forsaken moon. At any rate, you'd be allowed to make all kinds of modifications to your engine, but you would have to balance out the increased performance with cost, tendency to break down, and maneuverability. (Dunno whether to have cost limits and regulations like hydroplane competition does, or do it indirectly by having the alien lava sharks find too much metal in one place irresistably tasty.)
Sorry. Got sidetracked there. I was glued to the book for a week, and even enjoyed reading through the lengthy technical details without understanding them in the least. The way the author talked about them was important for communicating just what it was that attracted him to the sport; I bet a win-at-all-costs driver who also maintained his own boat would have written a very different book, just because of the different emphasis. At any rate, I got a good feel for what it must be like to experience the thrill of driving a boat that you built and maintained with your own hands.
