Electronic Specialties 328 EZ Tach Plus Review
This inexpensive digital inductive tachometer makes setting the idle on most engines very easy. I got it to tune up my lawn mower engines, since I can't judge by ear when they are idling at the prescribed 1750 rpm. It worked fine and both mowers -- 12 hp and 14 hp Briggs and Stratton engines -- start, idle and run much better now.Note that the reading on the tach jumps around a bit on simple engines like these, say from 1725 to 1800 or so, but that's OK. Just get the idle in the ball park, set the idle mixture needle valve per the manufacturer's instructions, re-adjust the idle if needed and you're good to go. If the engine idles smoothly and accelerates cleanly to it maximum operating speed, it's almost certainly running fine.
The ESI328 is a really handy tool, one that I wish I had discovered a long time ago. Highly recommended.
