The Gandy Dancers Review

For anyone who, like I, grew up in the Connecticut of the 1950's, the reading of this novel is a nostalgic return to an age of innocence. The town of Wellesport on the banks of the Pompaucau River is every small town that exisited before the advent of the super highways. Where doctors like Dr. Dunleavy still made house calls, kids first jobs were soda jerks at the local pharmacy, and everyone in town knew everyons else. Wellesport contains the state prison and tells the story of Henry Cutler, an inmate on death row, a sadistic deputy warden, and Henry's inevitable clash with the deputy in his bid to escape execution. An easy read that brings back fond memories for those of us who lived in the time and a great documentation of those times for those who missed out.
