Swedish Blood should win an Edgar nomination.
This is first rate mystery fiction in the tradition of Ross MacDonald. Like MacDonald before him, John Amiard weaves a multi-generational story into an intelligent and nuanced tale of family secrets and their consequences. Murray Bowen, the father of Family Systems Therapy, observed the power of family secrets to bind anxiety into the systems of family life. Illustrating the dynamics of Bowen Theory by crafting a fast paced story, Amiard engages the reader in the anxiety, fear and uncertainty experienced by Peter Frost, an investigative journalist who finds himself investigating his own family history. The reader wonders if there are some family secrets of her/his own family life that bear looking in to.
But this is not a tale embellished with hackneyed psycho-babble. This is a well paced mystery which leads the reader, step by step, through the streets and lanes of Cape Cod and Cambridge as well as Stockholm and the Archipelago of Sweden's Baltic Coast. I highly recommend Swedish Blood.
