Kateri Lodge Review
This is an honest, well-written, and engaging memoir about growing up during the 50's and 60's at a resort in Northern Wisconsin called Kateri Lodge.Ron Miller grew up the 2nd oldest of 7 boys, and reading about his early years at the lodge is a real delight. He takes the reader through different seasons at the lodge, describing the duties he and his older brother held, the different pranks they pulled, babysitting adventures, and more.
Two of the best chapters in the book are the first, THE JOURNEY NORTH, (I literally laughed out loud 3 or 4 times before finishing the chapter) and the fourth, THE FIRST WINTER, especially the section about storing the boats inside for the winter.
Miller has an incredible attention to detail, and it comes through in virtually every chapter. He remembers in detail, for instance, the time when he essentially let go a worker at the ripe age of 11.
One of the most touching stories of the book is from the chapter GETTING TO KNOW SOME OF OUR PEOPLE, as the author recalls Jack, one of the guests at the lodge.
But the most poignant part of the book for me is when Miller talks about his mother, "Mom", as her refers to her throughout the book. He's very open and honest about the many times his mother battled bouts of depression and illness, feeling at times very isolated at the lodge without the use of a car. On top of that, she raised 7 boys while running a resort. Miller acknowledges his father of course, saying he was a tough, albeit fair man. But it's clear she's the hero of this book, as the author writes at the end.."Mom was always the glue that held everything together."
The book ends with the simple quote, "Thanks, Mom."
