"Five Bells" Job Done Review

There are many different types of diving - both amateur and professional; Scuba, technical, military, ships, commercial and saturation are just a few without having to go into detail here. Author Tony Liddicoat is one of the few men I know who seems to have mastered them all at one time or another. Not only is this the story of his diving career and life - it is one which really is full of adventure. This man has even dived inside a Nuclear Reactor!!!
There are stories to make you laugh, stories to make you cry and others which simply want you to give this man a well-deserved round of applause.
As an example of the latter; In August 1981, he was working in Belize on a break professional military diving and teaching scuba diving to servicemen based there. On this particular day, it was already dark and the sea already very rough because Hurricane George was only 10 hours away and heading in their direction when he was called to the radio where a doctor informed him he had a patient with the Bends who needed to be taken underwater immediately. It was either that or the man died! Liddicoat was informed the patient, an American Tourist called Dick Alba, was already on his way and that was that! Barely conscious and weighing over 20 stone he was taken 5 miles out into that rough sea in a small inflatable that was completely swamped with every passing wave. There the unconscious man, dressed in only his pyjamas, was suspended on a trapeze below the boat. And that is how one man's life was saved during a hurricane. Liddicoat was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct and Diver magazine declared him "Diver of the Year!" When he returned home to his military diving depot in Marchwood, however, he was sacked as a military diver - for breaking the rules. His diving pay was stopped and his family hit untold hardship.
Written in a refreshingly honest style, sometimes it's the way he writes an event which is funnier than the event itself. He describes the Adjutant (an Adjutant is always the Commanding Officer's right hand man) as his "Lackie" - a word which is as equally descriptive but one which raises a smile. Another example comes courtesy of his being given a direct order which he describes thus; "A direct order is a last ditch tool used by the untalented in the military to get something done, which is sometimes illegal, and often plain ridiculous." How right your are! But then, here was a man with countless hours logged in his professional diving logbook being challenged by an officer with only 28 hours.
Liddicoat and I served in the same army at the same time and I recognise those officers. Sadly it is only in films starring Clint Eastwood that they really do get their comeuppance!
But this is not just about Tony Liddicoat's time in the army. Dick Alba went on to live another 18 years and Tony flew out to New Orleans to say goodbye to him when the end was near. To this day he still prefers the Rolex watch given to him by the man whose life he saved over wearing the gold Rolex given to him by the Emir of Bahrain - and that is yet another story...
So, if you are looking for the perfect Christmas (or whatever occasion) present for the diver in your life - here's my first choice because this book really will make you cry, it really will make you laugh and that "bottle-of-whisky-a-day Adjutant will simply make your blood boil. And, just in case some soldier who is experiencing such agony from a brainless officer should also read this book, just remember that once they are out of uniform and released into the real world, such people always recede into complete ignominy... Whereas people like Tony Liddicoat make the world a great place in which to live.
