Two In The Bush Review

This is a most unusual book. It's the true story of a young couple who in the years following World War Two left the United States to build a house in the wilds of Canada. Think of it as a kind of "On Walden Pond" meets "The Mosquito Coast", with overtones of "The Swiss Family Robinson".
I came across it in a most curious way. As a teenager back in 1953 I had taken a canoe trip with some other boys through Ontario, and one night, tired and bedraggled, we staggered into a lonely house on Dog Lake. It was owned by a couple named Moore, who had two little girls.
I recalled hearing that the father had written a manuscript titled "Two in the Bush". Recently, on a whim, I went on Amazon and, lo, there it was! Through the "Look Inside" feature, I realized that this was the family I had encountered 58 years ago.
As a writer (you can look me up on Amazon) I did not have much hope that the book would be any good, but when I downloaded it on my Kindle I was pleasantly surprised.
Here were two Americans, John and Ruth Moore, who were determined to build, not just a summer cabin on a remote lake, but a completely modern house with electricity, plumbing and picture windows. There were no roads to bring in the materials needed, no neighbors to help, and no medical facilities in case of emergency. The house had to be made to withstand howling gales and winter temperatures of 50 below zero, with the nearest town being ten miles away--all this in the days before cell phones or GPS.
Moore's description of how he did it is fascinating, but he also takes you through the many moods he experienced: the joy of encountering nature at its wildest; the fear of coming face to face with a bear; the terrifying threat of forest fires and the periods of intense loneliness when he could hear the sound of his own heart. He also speaks frankly about his frustrations as a writer, which anyone with similar aspirations can appreciate.
This book was published many years after John Moore's death by his daughter Dian, whom I dimly remember was one of the children. I have contacted her, and she tells me the house is still there, just as it was 60 years ago.
If I have any caveats, it is in the book's production and formatting for the Kindle. There are sketches and drawings that are almost illegible. There are also a number of typos (the letter "f", for instance, keeps getting replaced by the letter "r"), and I suspect the bound version would be better.
But these are minor complaints. Anyone who is interested in Canada or life in the wilderness will get pleasure from this book. I highly recommend it for that very selective audience. --Reynolds Dodson
