Baja Review

Baja is a stark departure when compared to Weber's previous, ruminative short novel Vanity, a first-person-in-third-person account of a morning in the life of a mirror-obsessed widower in California's redwood country.
Baja is an extended set piece. Take two handsome young hunks, Hollywood fringe types-an aspiring screenwriter and a desultory actress-place them on an isolated beach on the Sea of Cortez in northern Baja California and strip off their hippie clothing. (It's that era.) Let them frolic in the surf and make love and smoke marijuana by a driftwood fire and-ignoring the anachronistic presence of their VW bus, temporarily mired in the sand-fancy that the beach, called Laguna Paraíso, is their Eden.
Then introduce serpents: two Mexican fishermen with what may or may not be a legitimate grievance. Naked, Spanish-challenged, threatened but unarmed, the narrator-Barry-works through a melodrama's-worth of anguished decisions about how to protect himself and, especially, Leslie from the newcomers' increasingly overt menace. What is courage? What is prudence? What willingness to risk death does a man owe a woman to whom he has no formal commitment?
These are questions Barry has to answer during an unrelenting escalation of fear and violence. His consternation and the minutely detailed ebb and flow of advantage between the characters make for riveting if not very relaxing reading. There are twists galore-not least at the end, when all Barry's assumptions and actions are called into question.
Life is like that. One Christian metaphor for our unsatisfactory nature attributes it to "Original Sin." As a stoned Barry paraphrases the Bible: "Adam and Eve took one bite on that apple, the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, and it was like getting hit between the eyes with a sledgehammer! Whammo! Suddenly they had all this information, all these bits and pieces of input they'd never thought of before when they were just happily schlepping through the Garden...."
Good and evil in Barry's cosmogony are a hopeless muddle thanks to "Original Confusion." Baja is his bloody exegesis.
