When Sandy MacFarland confronted Tiggie over an illegal scallop harvest in the early 1980's she never imagined that 30 years later they would collaborate on a book of Tiggie's stories.
Charles "Tiggie" Peluso from Chelsea, had come to Cape Cod after World War II because the place intrigued him. He'd always been interested in fishing and spent over 30 years in offshore commercial fishing, one of the world's most dangerous professions. He learned about and became proficient using all kinds of gear and catching all kinds of ocean fish. Later, he also became quite proficient in commercial shell fishing and, remarkably, with rod and reel and fly rod catching both salt water and freshwater species.
Sandy is a long-time NEERS and ERF member and a biologist who served the Town of Orleans, on Cape Cod, as a shellfish warden. In that role she clashed with Tiggie and others over the need to conserve coastal resources that were not only under pressure from development but also from harvesting by those attempting to make a living of the resource.
These two individuals from different generations, backgrounds, education and experience collaborated to give us a glimpse into the world of commercial fishing through the stories that Tiggie dictated 40 years earlier and those he shared with Sandy.
The book is organized into 56 chapters. Each chapter relates one of Tiggie's stories. Sandy uses a different typeface to distinguish dictated stories from those he shared with her and her editorial comments. The stories are arranged chronologically, but no specific dates are provided. The topics range from Tiggie's first experience fishing offshore to his rod & reel experiences in the lakes and ponds of the Cape. They include descriptions of every sort of fishing ever done along the northeast coast and how they found the fishing grounds using only a compass, running times and a lead line. Tiggie relates several close calls with weather and how some of his colleagues were lost at sea. The maps and pictures provide additional depth to the stories. The descriptions of fishing gear and how it was deployed are somewhat difficult to follow for those not familiar with commercial fishing, but Sandy explains them to the reader. The later stories chronicle the decline of the offshore fish stocks and the increased use of technology to make finding and harvesting fish so much more efficient. They also chronicle Tiggie's transition from offshore to inshore fisherman and the increasing regulations created to help prevent the collapse of the fish and shellfish stocks.
The book is an easy but captivating read. Because the chapters are short and complete, it is easy to pick it up, read a story, think about it and then come back in a while and read another. Tiggie and his friends, colleagues and acquaintances come alive and reveal a way of life that most of us can't even imagine, but can deeply appreciate once we learn of it.
