Cypress Lake Review
Owen Cloud, in his early twenties, is invited to Florida by a boyhood friend who has a bad marriage, who wants to talk him into joining his real estate sales team. Owen refuses the offer of the job, but comes to Florida and takes a job as a night-time hospital orderly for $2.50 an hour. Owen thinks of himself as an ugly man, although a doctor told him, intending the statement as a joke, which Owen did not understand, you are not ugly, just homely.Owen lives in a dream-like world and thinks in a stream of conscious manner, one thought prompting another. Scenes that he sees and conversations that he hears remind him of statements made by philosophers, fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, novelists, movies, TV, radio, songs, commercials, comic books, remarks his teachers made to him, and words his mother and father said. Yet, as we read, we get the impression that Owen does not understand what he recalls, at least not fully. His recollections do not seem to help him improve his connection to reality. He had an older brother who constantly mocked him for things he did not know. Yet, this brother was warned not to go out into an undertow, swam anyway, and drowned, so who was smarter. Why, we wonder, did Owen need to think in this way? What was missing in his life that caused such behavior?
Owen thinks that girls are not interested in him because of his looks. But he is clearly wrong. We read how one girl, Peggy, dotted on him, and was quite passionate, before he came to Florida. He broke up with Peggy, but she kept trying to reconnect. He meets Marianne, a nurse at the hospital, who tells him that she had a bad marriage, and her husband was killed in an accident. She says she is determined never to marry again. Yet, at their second meeting, Marianne invites him to supper at her house and the two start a platonic relationship. But he is interested in Tina, another nurse he met at the hospital, who ignores him, and he falls in love with her. Then he goes on a blind date with Tammy. This is now four girls. What, we should ask, is going on? Will there be a fifth and a sixth, and perhaps even a seventh? Why did he break with the passionate girl? What was lacking in the relationship? Will he be able to find what he is missing with Marianne? Does he see something in Tina that would fulfill his need? Does his relationship with women have anything to do with his strange habit of referring to books, plays, TV, and other things?
When Owen was younger, he and his brother had their palms read. Madam Rose read Charlie's palm and said, "What will be will be." She predicted for Owen, "Your love-line indicates you will find happiness in love." The Madam was correct, or so it seems, in regard to Charlie; he died in an undertow. Did she predict Owen's future correctly? Will he finally find fulfillment in love? Will it be with the passionate girl of his youth, or Tina, or Marianne, or Tammy, or with someone else? And how will love change Owen? Or, is there no need for him to change?
